Space Is Only As Deep As One Makes It. A Thought, Written By Stephen Craig Rowe

When I lived on the farm I did so love mowing after the sheep and horses were gone. Before that they did more than half my work. I would fire up the old International Harvester tractor red on the green lawn and it would nearly take me the better part of a day. Off in never never land under the sky and on the earth. Good stuff that! Fond memories. The smell of fresh cut grass and the feel of the mow deck while Pink Floyd filled my ears from the Sony Walkman. I would steer and sing along to Shine… Continue

Delete Comment Dear Dawn, Thank you for the invitation. Many years ago I knew that oil painting was to be my chosen discipline. There, I studied and copyed the old masters. Neat and squeaky clean. Then in my adult life found time to develope my own signature and style, as it were. Through extreme, fierce and independent painting.
Tip Number One: Keep the Oil Painting Studio safe, secure, well ventated, dust free, and away from children and pets.
Tip Number Two: Remember always that the Oil Painting Studio is a "Wet" studio. Change into the painting clothing before entering and exiting or paint will follow you all around the house. Oil paint has a way of delighting even the smallest things.
Tip Number Three: Be safe, smart and aware of the health hazards. Wish I thought of this in my youth when I was mixing my own pigments, solvents, and toxic stuff like the old masters did. Now when I work on large works, wet on wet, in the wet studio. I wear surgical gloves, and sometimes a face mask to filter out the nasties.
Tip number four:
Honor the tradition of your chosen disipline by learning and knowing all there is to know about fine art oil painting. Read all the books, see all the works that have been made. See the works online and in the world's museums. Mix your own oils, mortar and pestal. Make your own blend of color. Be safe.
Five I think: Learn to cut and stretch canvas. Don't buy what you can do. Honor the tradition, take the time to learn and do.
Tip Number Six: Start messy, Stay messy! Do what you can do and do it well. Fine art is an adventure that improves the betterment. As we responsibly create new works that inspire others to go on and inspire others to create new works that honor the tradition of fine art. The experience, causes pause, thought and perhaps a higher calling. I am only a simple painter and sometimes bad poet. Yet pray that the works of my life touch the world as soft as the world touches my heart.
as ever be well, Stephen Craig Rowe
