I am...
Ah-young Jeon was born in Korea in 1984, she began studying art at an early age. When she was around 7, her mother wanted her to major in piano, but she didn’t play the piano and instead drew on the piano score sheets to keep from getting bored. That was the first time that she discover her joy and talent for art. Ah-young began her sculpture studies at Sun Hwa Art high school in 2000. In 2004 she came to the San Francisco Academy of Art University in 2004 to continue her to studies, and started to focus on ceramic sculpture and installation work. She loves to play with clay and design spaces were her works command presence. Her works are all about nature and continuity. She gives life to her works, each character having their own personality, each animals existence being felt by the viewer.
About my artwork
My current body of work is an exploration of animals: their colors, textures, and characters. I believe that animals have different personalities, so I make ceramic sculptures that show their facial expressions and gestures. Clay allows me to mimic the diversity of animal skins: scaly fish, slimy snails, ostentatious bird feathers, and slippery frogs and octopi. The ceramic glazes are used to create the vibrant colors that animals use for camouflage, seduction and survival. The rich colors can be used to seduce the viewer into looking more closely at the wonderful variety in the animal kingdom.
