AMERICAN BORN PAINTER - 1968 - NEW YORK, NY

Mr. Jansen had his first exhibition in 1974 at New York City's Park Avenue Lever House at age six. A retired Sergeant, Gulf War Veteran, appointed Associated Academician in the Department of the Arts, by the Academia Del Verbano Di Litery, Arti,Scienze, in Italy. Jansen has works in the Smithsonian Institution, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art Taiwan and Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) Russia. He has been awarded his place in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in Visual Art and Who's Who in International Art alongside some of the most noteworthy men and women in today's art world.

Educated in Europe and the US, Jansen was raised by immigrant parents to the United States, mother from the Westindies and father from Germany. He grew up speaking English, German and conversational Dutch. Jansen has traveled extensively throughout Western and Eastern Europe and lived in places such as SW and SE Asia. He grew up between New York City and Moenchengladbach Germany were movements of Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and Graffiti Art had their roots. He was awarded the Angel of the Arts Award in the category New Artist of the Year by the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers Florida. Jansen has over the last decade managed to transform his life from a soldier at War to becoming a catalyst behind "Modern Expressionism". This according to art historian Jerome A. Donson who discoverd Jansens work in 2003. "His work is reminiscent of the American style of the ash can school" says Donson. Donson directed shows at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) arranging traveling exhibitions for some of Americas greatest action painters such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Oskar Kokoshka and Franz Kline. Jansen started painting in 1982 after meeting Graffiti art legend "WESTONE” in Manhattan who became his mentor. But it wasn't until 1997 after Jansens Military discharge that he decided to follow his calling highlighting issues of social truth's, culture, identity and isolation in todays "Prairies of Stone". He has since coined his work with the term "Modern Urban-Expressionism". Jansens Biennials include the 12th International Print & Drawing Biennial in Taiwan where he received special recognition and was on of only eight American Painters selected in his category. The Intl Jury included David Kiehl. Jansen was also a winner at the Under/CURRENT/over/VIEW 8 Annual, at the (The Tampa Museum of Art), Juror Jeffrey Grove and recently was included in the International 8th. Contemporary Art Biennale "Dialogues" in St. Petersburg Russia, Curator: Larisa Skobkina.
About my artwork
The Modern Expressionist Movement:

Modern Expressionism is characterized by a post-expressionistic artistic style in which the artist creates their artwork by merging images and objects directly with their emotions. This is accomplished through their use of literal and abstract emphasis on color, texture, obscured subject matter, distortion, unnatural depth, exaggeration, and modified surrounding imagery. Modern Expressionism feeds from the roots of Expressionism, German Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism, combining them with present-day media and subject matter.

In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche presented his theory of the ancient dualism between two types of aesthetic experience, namely the Apollonian and the Dionysian; a dualism between a world of the mind, of order, regularity and polish and a world of intoxication, chaos, and ecstasy. The Apollonian asserted the rationally conceived ideal, whereas the Dionysian represented artistic conception proper, originating from man's subconscious. The analogy of Greek gods typifies a relationship between extremes - two godsons, incompatible and yet inseparable. According to Nietzsche, both elements are present in any true work of art. Expressionism is more Dionysian by nature as it presents bold colors, distorted forms and a perspective that can seem to be careless, yet originates and sustains more from inner-feeling than from rational thought.

The term was also coined in 1910 by Czech art historian Antonín Matìjèek as the opposite of impressionism: "An Expressionist wishes, above all, to express himself....[An Expressionist rejects] immediate perception and builds on more complex psychic structures....Impressions and mental images that pass through mental peoples soul as through a filter which rids them of all substantial accretions to produce their clear essence [...and] are assimilated and condense into more general forms, into types, which he transcribes through simple short-hand formulae and symbols." (Gordon, 1987).

Jansen’s own Modern Urban-Expressionism (founded in 1997) is an artistic style that connects our modern times to classical modes of representation with the graffiti art movement that emerged in the 1970's. His style of art is a response to the rising political and social changes in the world, and it rejects the traditional and conservative trends that remain out of touch with our current times and in opposition to cultural freedoms and expression.
