A painter and art-school lecturer
About my artwork
The Über-project "Considering Silesia" seeks to examine issues of mixed heritage (where this may contain conflict), cultural memory and identity and the subject of displacement and migration. These themes are specifically observed in the contemporary context of our evolving relationship with the internet and new media (our digital “way of seeing”) focusing on 'virtual expeditions' to my mothers' homeland (Lower Silesia) and the analogue activity of painting.

Artists I like
Masses - from cave painters onwards
Interests
Painting - then most visual arts, good food, my kids, galleries and museums, art education, exhibition previews, chatting to friends in my local pub - usually about art(s), politics, art education and our struggles therein.
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Chuck Close photo-embroidery at White Cube, Masons Yard, London - my favourite of recent months.

(Actually this was quite some time ago now, but I haven't seen anything to match this show since - much as I'd like to - it was genuinely one of those shows that stopped me in my tracks - they don't happen very often - although, to be fair, I didn't think much of his paintings, which was a surprise to me - I thought they were rather thin and rushed - they gave the impression of being churned-out rather than considered - not what I expected from Mr. Close, though I'd only seen his work in reproduction before, but there you go, you can't have everything, though I respect his work tremendously, yours "disappointed, if only a little bit, of Nottingham, UK" - such is life)

Aha! Finally - a new gob-smacker! Check out Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, Scotland.
I'm told the show will be travelling to Oxford, England.

My favourite installations in the show were Opera for a Small Room and The Killing Machine

Martin Creed at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK is fun.
Andy Warhols film portraits "The Eternal Now" at Ikon Eastside is also good - but is the Ikon Birmingham's only contemporary gallery?

Excerpts from critical reviews for "Considering Silesia"

Enigmatic landscapes charged with psychological resonance…. An impressive combination of methodical observation and technical draughtsmanship matched by a mature understanding of the medium and just the right amount of spontaneity and freedom give these studies a real sense of urgency, energy and vitality.

Thanks for your words, Mik. Yep, that sure is a mean and moody pic but I bet it's all for show! I like your drawings (aaah, life class - the memories!) and have been driven insane with jealousy by pictures of your studio... I might have to take a pill.
Take it easy!

Hi Mik, yeah Paul's piece was fantastic and I will tell him, thanks for the link, perfectly out on a limb I felt! Much more interesting than the rest of the place which was taken up by a rather contrived and derivative group show. Alas, being self taught/neophyte, I don't have that space to play with as yet, so introducing myself gradually. The open competition is being judged by a Sheffield gallery owner and an artist who's work I respect, so feeling hopeful. The winner gets a solo show which would be cool. I'm at a point at which I need to start knocking on doors so any advice would be hugely welcome! K.

Thanks Mik, much appreciated! Your work is marvelous in many respects, has not gone unnoticed by me I have to say.

Hi Mik,

that is quite a compliment. I'll meet you half way - it's hangs together well but it is very minimal for figurative work.

Quick note!!!! In retrospect both you and Michael Bowdidge were both correct. The Banzini piece (yellow/assembled parts/clutter) got the same feedback from my peers at our show: 'lots of energy but much clutter'. You were also right that about work on paper - I sold over 6 works on paper and made over a month rent on them!!!! My father was very keen about your comments last month as you work as a professional art teacher.

So I have split the two. More work on paper and a move to more minimal expressive pieces on canvas - let the subject appear naturally rather than too much overworking. I did sell two canvases at our show. I still paint on the floor of which am proud. Also getting into carving wood.

Big thanks from Luke

Ha - 'Active' isn't the word for it mate... teaching tomorrow night and then coming down to Gainsborough/Lincoln on thursday/friday for workshops, then back up here to hang the 'work in progress' show at the college... and of course the wobbly one is going in... never a dull moment/no rest for the wicked etc... Clay modelling sounds fun - been thinking about that kind of stuff as last week's lecture was on Grayson Perry and Meret Oppenheim.

Ditto the Bladerunner - been a while since I saw that too... Nice of you to drop by for an earful :) Some new stuff in the pipeline, one track which is kind of a krautrock/music concrete hybrid, and another one which is more straight forward electronica, though God only knows when I'll actually have time to get them finished, as they are a lot more 'constructed' than most of the XP stuff, so they take a lot longer to do...

Take care old bean, have fun tomorrow!

Well, you know what they say: "make hay paintings while the sun shines", but mind you don't leave it so long that they lose it again. Say 'hi' to Irene for me...
