- Balam Bartolomé (Chiapas, Mexico, 1975) studied Visual Arts at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas from the U.N.A.M. Has participated in solo and collective shows both in his country and abroad. In Mexico has exhibited in museums, galleries and institutions such as the Museo Carrillo Gil, Ex Teresa Arte Actual, Centro de la Imagen, La Panadería and LAALvaca and in galleries as Galería Nina Menocal and Art & Idea. Has also exhibited his artwork in the following countries: Argentina, Germany, Spain, U.S., France, Holland, Japan, Paraguay, Portugal, Czech Republic and Uruguay.
Has participated in art fairs such as The Armory Show in U.S., Art Forum and Art Cologne in Germany, ARTEBa in Argentina and MACO in Mexico.
From 1998 to 2003 was member of the Atlético art collective which developed several projects in Mexico and abroad.
Received a fellowship from the Jóvenes Creadores program of the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes in 2004.
Lives and works in Mexico City.
- About my artwork
- In Chinese philosophy, the path that leads to Tao is conveyed as the process that happens from the essence of Being to not Being. This state near illumination is for chinese the true essence of knowledge; a state where what truely means are not things itself but the space that happens amid them assumed as proxenia or emptiness. A total integration between us and our background, where nothing is more or less important than everything else and where what is essential is the relation in between. This is an artistic conviction many times associated with sculpture and of particular importance in for example readymade and its consequence: appropriation. After all our relation with the other drifts from our interest or the lack of it. It is conditioned to our scale of values in respect to our circumstance. My artistic project intends to present a view to the comprehension of this untranslatable code, a hypnotic language that invites us to proximity, to the symbolic translation of intuition towards reality: to explosion. The aesthetic I would like to reach in my work pretends to avoid anecdotic or documental character. It is a visualization of reality, sometimes evocative, that goes towards the apprehension and condensation of diverse atmospheres. A reflection – in both senses, analysis and likeness- in order to understand a particular vision of existence and every day life.
