About my artwork
Statement 2008

“The gravity series” paintings I’ve been working on for the past three years in my studio in Dublins Henrietta street are vibrant colourful abstract works that are based around the concept of gravity.
They are mostly process driven and retain a truthfulness to materials paint on canvas, surface / support, non illusionists or representational, but explore the physicality and luminosity of the paint itself.
Colour although often does reference the natural world i.e.; blue equates with water / sky, the colour red to fire / blood etc and some of the paintings can seem to reference landscape or reflections in water viewed through a many layered surface
There is also a performative element in the making of the paintings and because it is usually oil paint being used which can take a long time to dry between layers of paint a history is embedded in the surfaces of the works.
Artists I like
Caravaggio-Goya-Picasso-Gerhard Richter-Robert Mapplethorp-Jenny Saville
Howard Hodgin-Barry Flanagan-Andy Warhol-Marc Quinn-Jean Micheal Basquiat.
Louise Bourgeois-Edward Kienholz-Michael Cullen-Thomas Demand
Francis Bacon-Sean Scully-Mathew Barney-Mark Francis.
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Julian Opie, Walking on O'Connell street. Dublin City Gallery,The Hugh Lane.
The centre of the artworld is
New York, London, LA, Berlin, Beijing, my studio, online, nowhere and everywhere

Hi,
Thanks for the comment. For the most part I make my work as one off pîeces. And upon closer inspection - the materials are not so conventional as one might think. Keep in touch -

And thanks for the comment, next time when you are in Estonia let me know. We will give you a nice tour around local museums, galleries and culture-factories. 'Our' main export artist was and is Jaan Toomik. Makes not bad videoart :)

Hi Daniel! I am new to artreview and just came across your gravity series ---LOVE IT!
I see that you also are a fan of Sean Scully. I recently did a series entitled "Lines and Angles" very much inspired by his complex use of stripes and layers. You can view a few of these pieces under my "Assemblage" album. I would welcome your input. Would love some feedback.
Thanks!
Rosemary

Daniel, thanks for reply. Have read your statement and looked at your artwork. It's great to see that someone else has a similar fascination with gravity, it gives me hope. I will be updating my statement and downloading more images over the next while. Have also got a couple of exhibitions coming up over the summer, in the middle of "spilling" onto mdf. Will keep you posted. Tell me if you have any shows, might get a chance to see them. Good luck.
