Artist
If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Drawing, Painting
I am...
an artist from Ireland and living in Edinburgh. I teach art part-time to fund my practice. I've just been awarded an art residency to New York so looking forward to that!
About my artwork
With a background of life painting working mainly in oils the figure has always been present in my work. I am interested in freezing a moment and catching the subject unaware. I attempt to show beauty in might often go unnoticed: everyday realities of the domestic life of a family, clothes hanging on a washing line, dilapidated buildings. My paintings often evolve from photgraphs, some of which are taking while travelling. Rather than photgraphing the obvious I am more interested in dilpaidated buildings, walls and doors. These images are more significant to me and reveal more than their peeling surfaces suggest.
Artists I like
I am inspired by realist painters, photographers and directors/cinematographers: Eric Fischl, Andrew Wyeth, Lucian Freud, Nan Goldin, John Currin, Edward Hopper, Hitchcock, Hanneke, Ang Lee, Coen Bro's, Kronenberg, many more... Philip Pearlstein, Paula Rego, Jenny Saville as well as some of the Dutch painters of the past to name a few...
Interests
Aside from painting, I love watching films(which often inspire me),travelling, trying to play musical instruments, socialising, dancing and generally being active.

Hello Nuala, thanks... yes, i think you are better off traveling light, even if you have to keep in mind your goals of making good conections for future shows and events. see how it goes from there and enjoy yourself :)
best, G.

hello Nuala, i got your email and wanted to wish you a very meaningful, successful and fun trip to nyc. it terms of art works to take there i would not take anything to big, as you will find that all the dealers will probably be taken with there own things and it may be not the best time to approach them unless you are there to make acquisition :) i have been working on both side of the fence for many years and i know that during the art fairs everyone is focussed on the fondamental, making money... in any event, take brochures, catalogues and cards to plan and set up for future events and opportunities... of course stay open in terms of being able to show some of your art at the armory show, but unless you have been invited by a dealer in place, i would not have too much expectations in terms of getting wall space at the armory, although i hope i am wrong of course. i would go there to make connection and prepare the next one if at all possible... even two years waiting for this kind of thing sounds like a good opportunity if it is offered to you.. i hope that information will have meaning for you, that you will enjoy your trip... let me know how it goes if or when you have time... amicalement, Gilles
