If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Painting
About my artwork
In my work, I engage in a process of unraveling form, stripping it of its boundaries, its sense of solidity and confinement, and merging it back into a ground of abstract potential; a kind of circular feedback between abstraction and representation.
I am concerned with the painting process and the affect of paint, and how it becomes the visceral force behind form, charging form with emotive and psychological qualities.
I am interested in creating fictional spaces for the imagination to occupy. I remove forms from their normal context, allowing them to adopt a meaning other than their intrinsic meaning. These forms and symbols have an open ended resonance, giving the narrative a kind of freedom through lack of constraint.
I am concerned with themes of the sublime and the interaction of nature and culture; the way in which humanity is intrinsically linked to our environment and the material world.
Artists I like
Peter doig, Dexter Dalwood, Tomory Dodge, Prunella Clough, Basil Beattie, Laura Owens, Cy Twombly, Matthias-Weischer, Wilhelm Sasnal, Whistler, Philip Guston, William Blake, Ken Kiff.....
