I am...
Many people have simple statements to summarize the content of their work. I draw from things of the past and from my own life experiences here on this earth. To sum up my work in such terms would be limiting. I think that might be the problem with the world in which we live. Humans want to take very complex systems, such as the environment and reproduction, and simplify and categorize their purpose. Through the creation of scientific and political structure, humans have lost touch with the feminine and natural aspects of life. For the past couple hundred years, man has been on a mission to control and decipher the spontaneities of life. When this method has proven unsuccessful or when the natural systems fight back, our reality is shaken.
I’ve created my own world to isolate and digest my conflicts with the one in which I live. I think it is important to acknowledge that the one in which I live did not develop over night. For many years man has been shaping our social patterns and the way we interact with each other and the natural world. Models from the past are tools in which we can understand what mistakes we’ve made as humans. They become cautionary tales as what to avoid in the future. The medieval Christian outlook is an example of such a model. This was a world in which man felt threatened by the natural world and female biology, not so much different from the one in which I live. Medieval Christianity instilled in its followers many fears. Not only were they fearful of sinning and of condemnation, but of nature because it was unpredictable and evil.
It is my belief that the development of a world like this over the past couple hundred years has created a network of humans that are insecure and selfish. We live in a world where those who have something to offer are exploited. For this reason and because of the medieval Christian outlook, our relationship to the feminine and natural world is unbalanced.
