I am...
My name is Rachel de Joode, I'm a photographer/artist from originally Amsterdam - The Netherlands, have been living and working in Berlin for the last 3 years and I just moved to Paris. In short, I make fashion-editorials,,next to art-photography and (wallpaper-) designs. My photography is Magical Realistic, Absurd & Surreal. I create contemporary Mis en scenes using modern symbolism. Working as an editorial photographer I've had publications in various international magazines such as: Qvest, Lodown, Style, DEUTSCH, Pulp, Blvd, BIGmagazine. Through all my work there is a recurring theme which is the mystification of everyday life and especially everyday/contemporary objects. As an 'all round Life-Style scientist' I investigate the collective memory of our time, pointing out and magnifying the absurd of contemporary culture. I seek a balance between the ethereal world of the unconscious and the rationality of reason, my work has been described as Magic Realism of the new century. About my artwork
I am an artist, photographer and designer. Even though I work in these diverse fields there is a recurring theme in all of them which is the mystification of everyday life.
Within my work, I seek to portray the otherwordlyness of the most profane aspects our world.
I investigate the collective memory of our time, pointing out and magnifying the absurd of contemporary culture. As being a magician, I 'sanctify' common-day curiosities.
Seeking a balance between the ethereal world of the unconscious and the rationality of daily life, my work can be characterized as Magic Realism of the new century.
I create contemporary Mis en scenes using modern symbolism. I use tokens of our daily life (for example coffee cups, carpet spray, sportsocks, pre-sliced bread, post-it, shoulder pads, venetian blinds or remote controls). I portray these modern symbols metaphorically and redefine them in very diverse ways, deconstructing common life in contemporary times.' This leads to absurd and surreal imagery which takes the viewer on a strange trip to the other side of things.
Artists I like
Ansy Warhol, Guy Bourdin, Maurizo Cattelan, Jeff Koons, David Lynch, Duchamp, Lewis Carrol, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, Olaf Breuning, Viktor & Rolf, Inez van Lamsweerde
