About my artwork
Karin Hanssen (°Antwerp 1960) studied painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp where she graduated in 1993.
1994 - when she saw the movie The thrill of it All (Doris Day) - was the starting point for her paintings on the theme of social determinism. The material from photo’s and film (post-war screwball comedies) she uses, refer to a near past (flash-back), post-war period when leisure time, private property and hope were newly promoted.
In 1995 she took up drawing again which resulted in 'Modern Living', a series of miniature drawings on social patterns.
In 2004 her book Modern Living with an essay of Gregory Salzman and a short story of Alain de Botton, was published.
In 2009 her book The Thrill of it All, with an overview of 15 years of painting, will be published.
Artists I like
many artists from the past on until now (video, film, photography, painting, installation, minimal art etc...too many to name!)
