An internet presence - A waste of time?

I've snubbed my nose at myspace and all of a sudden, there are so many artists on it. Maybe it's a NYC thing, but every NYC artist I know have a blastin site there. And they get on it themselves. A... Continue

Curator, Gallerist
I am...
A curator in the East End of Long Island, otherwise known as the Hamptons. I directed a very staid gallery in Bridgehampton with
the old masters, and not so 'old masters'. Gallery artists are too vast to go through, so I will name a few of my favorites that were in the gallery. Larry Rivers, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Hans Hofmann, Willem Dekooning, Jackson Pollock, Clintel Steed,
Leroy Grannis, Robert Motherwell, John Chamberlain, Alexander Calder, Marsden Hartley and the ever-wonderful Milton Avery, of course I forgot Louise Nevelson and Philip Guston.
About my artwork
I am the person who has an eye, I pick and choose.
I am not an artist, but an artist's friend and helper, someone they can count on to work with, and in the end, also sell.

I always work in a gallery, so I could be named a gallerist/curator.
There are only so many days in the week, hours in the day, so time is always tight. 3 days are usually spent in a gallery, 3 spent on my curating endeavors, usually at another gallery. 1 day is spent lolligagging around enjoying wherever I am at the moment.
Artists I like
The artists I like are too vast to go on about.
One artist I am very fond of right now is Samantha Keely Smith.
There are Gilbert and George. Matthew Barney, Francesco Clemente,
Rene Ricard (known mostly for his poetry), Cy Twombly, Chuck Close, Ross Bleckner, Dale Chihuly, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, Roger Welch, Michael Knigin, Ingrid Madera, Crash, Daze,
Nick Taylor, Kimberly Goff, and on and on it goes.
Interests
Roaming around the world on the internet and life, looking at
cities, the art, old and new.

Cooking. This seems to be one of the most magnificent manueveurs
one can take on for the good of your soul. To cook and have small feasts for friends.
A mean Bouillabaisse, a lovely veal stew with rosemary, fresh caught fish which are abundant in the Hamptons, vegetables raised on the farms out here. Backyard dinners in the garden or
at a little yacht club with a grill, watching the sunset.

What is wonderful in the summer are the drumming groups which get together on the beach and drum until midnight on Mondays.
Photographing the surfers. Taking a couple hours off in the afternoon or early evening for a swim in the ocean. And then, at night, looking at the stars.
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Art Basel just finished up, that says it all. I curated a show which will open this Saturday, Dec 22nd. I'm sure that will be more than good.
The centre of the artworld is
New York, London, Berlin

Hi Pamela..
I'm new to this ArtReview thing..but finding it quite interesting. It seems so inter-related. Many paths with other trails. I started off doing a search for Chuck Close and from there found several artists that were links and one of those links led me to you. I've read your thoughts and found them interesting, not to mention your connections to other artists that I admire. I've requested you as a friend. I do hope you'll accept.

Hi Pam, I enjoyed reading your comments in response to the blog about internet presence etc. I wonder if any of the artists that you mention in your sidebar would have embraced the web 2.0 technology if it had been a around when they were starting out... regards, Cyrus

yes, well that is NY for you... in LA everyone is an actor or producer... i started as a gallery dealer in LA in 84 (just put up a few pictures) then i went on to worked as a private dealer and a broker, as well as organizing private expos for artists. then my own work came about and i had to redefine my priorities. it is all great and important as long as we do it with joy :)
