Digital, Drawing, Event, Film, Installation, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video
I am...
a painter, installation artist, photographer and writer

On march 13th two of my animation videos are shown on public viewing screens, e.g. at subway stations, at shanghai. They are about the demolition and rebuilding of citysites and meet by this issue the experience of the passing by people who see their city changing nearly every day.

My purpose has been chosen by the curators of the project, which is hosted by the Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai.

BORDER PROJECT, Tblisi, Georgia, taking place November 2008

The video animation "SMALL NOTHING" will be shown at the project´s presentation in november 2008. The video brings up a new aspect of project´s issue "border" in showing how fantasy blurrs borders between past and present in mind.

The video animation is made up of old postcards with images from big German towns about the turn of century (19th to 20th century), combined with animated clouds drifting by. There is a music running which reminds us to the circus show of our childhood, one music theme repeated endlessly.

The idea of this animation video is to make visible the border between fantasy, the past (our childhood, our wishes to return to the probably better past) and the reality of the present.

URBAN IDENTITY, video art & architecture event at ART EXPO international, Los Angeles, USA
August 14th-16th 2008

The short animation video SANTIAGO CAPRICCIO will be shown on Art Expo´s URBAN IDENTITY, video art & architectural event in the Gallery Row area, downtown LA, august 14th-16th, 2008.

The selected work deals with the ideas behind the architectural surface and its infrastructural needs. It shows by moving the facade of Santiago de Compostela´s cathedral the liquidity of human believes. As much as stone is washed away by the time, ideas erode.

EDINGBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 08, 8th-31st of august
TOTALKUNST GALLERY

The Totalkunst Gallery curators have chosen my video film LOST CITY for presentation during the Edinburgh Festival 08.

LOST CITY short belongs to a collection of video shorts which deal with philosophical questions. The collection QUESTIONS BIGGER THAN LIFE is characterized by films having a pretitle section and an animated or real shot section. Both parts of every film are presented with a sounddesign, constructed by PETER KASTNER.

Commonly the text part put a thought in question and the image/video part answers to the thought-in-question. Its a technic used in Barock age, which is called Emblemata, working with the synergy produced by two different medias bind together to one issue.

LOST CITY´s text part suppose the idea of an psychidelic cityscape answering to the emotions of its citizen or a visitor. If there is anxiety in visitor´s mind, the city enlarges.
The video part shows a digital manipulated street scenery of a brickstone lane and a parksidelike surrounding through which the spectator is driven. The images are underlyed with a driving horroresk laughter.

LOST CITY film is about 5 minutes.

August 29th 2008, TOTALKUNST Gallery's mINIvIDfEST is showing LOST CITY again.

SHAPING TI-CITY, Amsterdam, FILMHUIS CAVIA and ZAAL 100, 3rd - 5th october 2008

The videos LOST CITY, THE 4TH TIME, THE 100,000TH JOURNEY have been chosen by the curators of SHAPING TI-CITY and shown at the opening night of the show at Filmhuis Cavia and Zaal 100 in Amsterdam.

SHAPING TI-CITY is an independent art project, developed by German and Dutch artists. The event offers a variety of art forms ranging from video art to painting and sculpture. The issue of the TI-project is how to deal with new forms of living in postindustrial societies.

THE 4TH TIME is about the issue time itself and how time as a scientific, psychological and philosophical concept has to be imagined.

Finally, TE 100,000TH JOURNEY confrontes the viewer with the idea that life is a journey, too, and that the real journeys are experienced in our minds and hearts.

FREEDOM OF CHOICE INTERNATIONAL VIDEO AND FILM PEACE FESTIVAL, 4th - 6th december 2008 at Fabrica Do Braco de Prata (old army factory), Lisbon, Portugal.

The FOCFEST will be take place at the same time at Yerevan (Armenia) and Istanbul (Turkey).

PLACE OF SAFETY is the fifth film of the collection of art videos called PHILOSOPHICAL CARTOONS, part of the collection of the Deutsches Institut für Animationsfilm, DIAF, Dresden.

THE PLACE OF SAFETY as any other video film of this collection presents to the viewer an issue in its pretitle section concerning human beings drive away from death and horror towards eternal life and freedom of all sorrow, followed by the beautiful images of cherry blossom´s branches. Peter Kastner´s sound design works against the idylle produced by the image as well as the text, that is about the eternal search for safety as well in literature as in real life.

About my artwork
REBECCA SCHÖNSEE, ARTHISTORIAN, ABOUT tHE WORK:

THE HOUSE OF SHADES

"The House of Shades installation potrays an intricate play on the symbolims of the house as womb or cave, and in consequence of the feminine principle and its sheltering function. Instead the ground adopts a menacing power emasculating the figures inscribed within. The common figure-ground relationship is twisted presenting the ground as dominant function. The misogynistic and coarse language in teh background of the paintings used in the installation appears as futile attempt to speak up against the tacit dominance of teh feminine introspection, which is proving to be untouchable. The defeated "ècriture masculine" lapsed back into shady existence. By enlightening the possible impact of the passive part within human relations, the installation disclosed (öffnet) mechanisms of violence that often go unnoticed and yet are vital to gender driven contexts as well as to any kind of competitive environment in which power is as stake."

DRAWINGS:

"The topic of violence is scrutinized even further in teh scribble drawings, in which torture becomes an essential issue. The void space created by the scribbling interacts with the ground to representing the absend subject. While teh chaotic strokes sadistically attempt to bind the absend body, the victimized ground in its inexhaustible capacity to receive the torturious line regains aggressive momentum in its power to survive. The blurringe of role enables the subject to function both as victim and as vitimizer and deterioates the sadomasochistic game presenting the viewer with the brutal reality of the issue itself."

PAINTINGS:
"The constellation of the figures is reminiscent of psychodrama or the set up used in psychotherapy. The hierarchy of power is symbolized by the positioning of each figure, scales of this hierarchy being distance, vicitnity or postiions in relation to the grid. The bleak ground conveyes psychich spaces that are devoid fo time measure or spatial depths. The psychodramatic action takes palce in an archaic environment in which the figures are forced to confront the very extremes of their human condition.

...

The work of Joas Sebastian Nebe enters a dialogue with Viennes actionism. As opposed to open and brutal rebellion against established order as is characteristic of the works of Adofl Frohner, Nitsch and Muehl, Nebe uses means of narrative to expose hidden violence within contemporary structures. His work functions as reflector on important topics of the Viennese avantgarde movement, such as their use of archaic motifs and repeated referenece to ritual sacrifice. Thus Nebe creates a meta-discourse that discusses different artistic perspectives of rebellion against repressive social constraints. Whereas Viennes Actionsim is known for an excessive consideration fo orgiastic experience, Nebe blocks kathartic relief. Instead, the main focus on the implact of veiled resistance touches upon neglected issues such as passive aggressiveness, whcih cannot be released within the aestehtic function. By stressing that violcen never be a solution to human problems Nebe's art trnaports an important sociopolitical statement."

Thanks for your comments. It seems we both repond to eachothers work. There seems to be something in common with our works too. Your cloth works have a fairytale otherworldly sensibility. Keep in touch.

The mythical, puppet-like nature of your cloth work is intriguing.
