I am...
NOW ACCEPTING PORTFOLIOS FOR 2009!

COMMERCE Gallery (at the Go Away Garage)

We call ourselves such due to the fact we are on Commerce Street and the gallery occupies the front half of a private fabrication shop called (infamously) the Go Away Garage.
We are a venue for the arts..
We exhibit (predominately) the visual arts, classic high art to street art low brow.
We do present performance work such as installation, conceptual, experimental sound and theater, small musical acts and the like.
We have approx. 200+ linear feet of wall space (with moveable center walls) .
2000 sq feet of floor. The perimeter walls are 12 feet high. The ceiling area is 14 feet high.
There is a loading dock with 10 foot high overhead door.
We can handle large work.
The building proprietor, the gallery advisor and the preparator all have 2 decades of event and exhibition experience.
We work along side of regional museums for promotion of the arts.
We are, at the same time, hardly stuffy.
We enjoy presenting all works, benign to bizarre.
The Midwest may be conservative, however we are not.
Our location of Wichita, Kansas is home to several state universities and junior colleges.
These boast large populations of foreign students for aviation, medical, engineering, educational as well as theological.
All of the above have fine art departments and we offer our services to those students as well as the abundant number (per capita) of private sector working artists.
We have exhibited several out of state and country artists in many of our group exhibits.
Our venue is open to all types and styles of art and artists.
We (and our city) are available to accommodate artists (from anywhere) looking for an attractive, easy to work in and with, well attended gallery.
Wichita does boast a vibrant “scene”.
Our gallery crawl night is called “Final Friday”.
Geographically our gallery is the center of this crawl (literally).

We accept portfolios (hard copy or digital) from artists that are serious and present themselves and their work in a courteous, professional manner.
2008 is booked, 2009 still has several openings (but hurry).
We do not have to like or “get” your work.
We do have to respect it.
Therefore the criteria are; Quality of craftsmanship and quality of intent.
We look forward to hearing from you.

For porfolio submissions;
www.artcontractor.com

The rate for '09 will be 500USD.
The time frame available is 7 days up to and including the "Final Friday" of the month.
Final Friday is the gallery crawl night for Wichita.
The artist is to deliver the work (either in person or shipped )
Our preparator will install the exhibit (artist involvement is only when neccessary).
The artist may at their discretion hold a public reception, which may include an Artist Q&A.
The artist will then remove work (or have return shipped).
Advertisement of the exhibit by COMMERCE Gallery does NOT include any printed materials.
Regional PR will include notification of exhibit to regional news publications and our regional email list of 5000-plus names of regional visual art patrons.
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
All of ours.
The centre of the artworld is
nowhere and everywhere

The Salon was conceived as a response to the upcoming River City Biennale. The RCB has raised the bar for the inclusion of artists in a juried process, and this Salon des Refusés will offer the Wichita viewing public the opportunity for a larger dialog about influential artists in the Wichita area, some of which were eliminated from the RCB during the jury process and others who were nominated by peers.
The Salon des Refusés is a historical reference to the state-sponsored 1863 exhibition of artwork (some 3,000 pieces) which were rejected from the official Paris Salon. Napoleon III wanted to let the public have the final say regarding the legitimacy of the work, resulting in a show adjacent to the Paris Salon. Since then, Salon des Refusés shows have come to represent the "rejects" from juried exhibits. Often these shows take place with the blessing and support of the curators and jury members, and are intended to underscore the difficult job of judging artwork, while showcasing the work of the artists who "almost made the cut."
Thursday, May 15, 6-9pm: Preview open to the public.
Friday, May 16, 7-10pm: Opening Reception.
Final Friday, May 30, 7-10pm: Final evening for viewing.
