I am...
... a curious traveller (most recently Moscow, Istanbul, Venice and Berlin), cocktails connoisseur (I hosted New Zealand’s 42 Below Vodka party at the Venice Biennale in 2005), art collector, curator and writer, I am now doing everything I love as director of my arts management company Rob Garrett Contemporary Fine Art.
I was previously a senior manager with Creative New Zealand, New Zealand’s Arts Council, where I led New Zealand’s 2005 Venice Biennale project (et al’s the fundamental practice), and prior to that a member of the Arts Council’s governing body. I was Head of the Dunedin School of Art where I founded the school’s contemporary art theory programme and its international Artist Residency programme Artists at Work; and co-founded, with Ngai Tahu (Maori first peoples tribe), the school’s residency programme aimed at developing Ngai Tahu’s young visual artists. I also initiated and founded Dunedin’s Otago Festival of the Arts, a boutique arts festival for a boutique city. I trained as an artist and have a fine arts degree from Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University, and a post-graduate degree in Art History from Otago University.
I am currently a member of Wellington City Council’s Public Art Panel, and am a founding member of the (NZ) Venice Foundation Working Party which is working to establish a New Zealand Venice Foundation to ensure the country’s continued presence at this most prestigious of international art events. My passion for the arts includes frequent international travel to keep up-to-date and maintain the company’s networks; regular articles and reviews on contemporary art; and collecting the works of emerging artists.
