Too true, art is ultimately about communication and what we communicate about hasn't really changed all that much, it may come in a varying form but what is said is taken from a fairly small pool. Seeing as you're a photographer it may be worth looking at john goto, he seems to be very interested in taking fairly directly fron the art of the past.
