I know everyone in NYC thinks it's NYC that is the center or they wouldn't be there for the most part...it is expensive, hard, and very competititve. I thought so too, but now that globalization is so much more prevalent and even the Whitney Biennial (of American art?) is indicative of the loss of importance of American everything, what IS the Center of the Art World?? Isn't that question really a little different than it was 60, 50, or even 10 years ago?? Much of the art shown in NYC as the most cutting edge is by artist from other countries, they just come to NYC because they too believe it is necessary. We all do or did. But I wonder how much longer that is going to be so. And whether is it right, given the loss of importance of the American Empire and it's Hegenomy on the minds and hearts of the world. As Xing Lei used to say - Jackson Pollak was the great artist of the 50's because of the Cold War, and the need to make an American cowboy the cultural icon of the world's art. The politics of power is very thinly veiled beneath the fashion of the art of NYC and the world.
Hi Paul...are you sure it still is the center of the artworld? well...at least the center of the ones that decide whose art is worthy of big money and critical acclaim anyway. Hope all is well for you. L
