I am...: RejectEffect is a Detroit, MI based art collective that was formed in 2006, by Maria Prainito and Timothy Gaewsky. We met while in the MFA program at Vermont College and soon realized we shared similar ideas, interests and artistic pursuits. We also shared an awareness of being outsiders; producing work we thought was engaging but overlooked or ignored by those who were involved in the local and wider art communities. Accepting this status as rejects, we felt RejectEffect was an appropriate pseudonym to signify our embracement of participating on the periphery of the art community. RejectEffect also represents the development of our collaborative efforts and our desire to produce work that engages all possibilities of human enjoyment. Whether it is painting, photography or public interventions our practice is to create work that is humorous, disturbing and challenging for both us and the viewer. We aspire to create work that explicitly presents thoughts that sit on the palette of one’s tongue waiting to be spoken or swallowed.
