If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Drawing, Painting
I am...
a Japanese artist residing in Cumbria.
About my artwork
I’m always hurling a question to myself “what is art after all?”

Surrounded by hyper-excessive visual media, almost being paralyzed by mediacracy and information manipulation, what does painting mean to me compared with other numerous artistic expressions, especially living in the epoch of post-Marcel Duchamp, who revolutionarily wiped out the meaning of art, or else seemed to declare “Art is dead” in presenting a “ready-made” toilet as a work of art? I admit, of course, and enjoy its profound argument totally, though...

What does art mean to humanity, then, since paintings existed before writing was invented in human history? How can I challenge this intricate contemporary society by means of visual art, if at all? I do believe that art still has the power to convey some elements of core meaning to humanity with its own language.

My aim is, however, to create something simple yet thought-provoking, portraying someone iconic, somewhere universal, precious moments, eternal fragments and a light in the darkness. Using photographic images as means of entwining memory and reality, speculation and word, I try to create snapshots of the ever-changing present moment, embodying semiotic images of our time.

I employ a brush hatching technique using Japanese sumi ink and acrylic, which I’ve invented and developed in recent years. This is also inspired by the classic method "disegno", based on drawing, established in Florentine school in early Renaissance era. Technically I’ve enhanced its conception combining with some latest neurological study so that somehow I might attain to show fragments of the full picture of “how a human being sees”.

Thus, through my creative endeavours I’m exploring how to bridge East and West, as well as our artistic heritage and contemporary understanding.
Artists I like
Albrecht Dürer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, William Blake, Édouard Manet, Andy Warhol, Andrew Wyeth, Thohaku Hasegawa, Tadashi Kawamata, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Yousuf Karsh, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diane Arbus, Sebastiao Salgado, Bruce Weber, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Andrei Tarkovsky
Interests
history, art history+theory, iconology, aesthetics, philosophy, theology, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, semiotics, psychology, neuroscience, photography, film, etc...
The centre of the artworld is
nowhere and everywhere

Thanks Hideyuki for invited me to be part of your list of friend.
I read your text of presentation and I allowed myself to say that you must not confuse the painting with the figure or the art with the image. Do not forget that the East kisses to West during every twilight. The bridge about which you speak already is in the nature. Neither forget that in the art there is no current importance. That East and West are two points with milleniums of different culture and that at the same time are different with regard to the South.
I estimate your courage and your sincerity thrills me.

domo arrigato gozaimashita

i find your use of sumi-e and acryllic very original, giving many works a hyper real texture. do you start with photographic images and then manipulate them?

Exquisite work, or should I call it labour as it looks very time consuming.
PS.: Do you know the Austrian artist Rudolf Hausner?!

Hi Hideyuki,
I do not use math and geometry in their literal form. But I use today's quantum physics with their new possible interpretations of what is called the 'classical reality': our reality of what we finally picture in our head to made our own pictures as artists.
Cheers
Shlomo
