Hi Jared, I’m sorry I’m writing to you only today, but I’ve been sick. However, as I told you in my last message, I write here below some selected comments from my pupils about your works and about the real meaning of art. Remember: they are twelve years old (but they do not seem superficial).
I hope you will appreciate.
Here are the comments:
Francesca:
“ In my opinion for creating art it’s necessary that a person is able to imagine, to know, but -first of all - to dream. Through the phothos and the answers of Jared I have understand that he’s very fond of his work of photographer and he tries to capture the most important moments of life”.
Luca M.
“A real artist is able to create something full of meaning, for himself and others and universal, which can last forever”
Sara P.
“For me if a photographer loves his subject he must decide freely what he has to portray, so the others will feel his true emotions”.
Luca P.
“I liked especially the part of his interview where he exhort us not to waste time to buy a sofisticated camera and so on, but to waste time for finding the right light, a good position … and the best for an important photography “.
Nina:
“Making art means to succeed in building a very original work even through few and ‘poor’ instruments“.
Tommaso:
“A photographer who wants to make art is a person, like Jared, who’s able in finding the most true and typical features of a place, even if it is difficult to reach“.
Jessica:
“Maybe Jared Martin travelled to several countries for job, but only when he became a photographer he could appreciate more and more the deep beauty of that places!“.
Martina:
“I’m completely agree with him and I found very interesting the part of his interview where he told his own research of ispiration”.

Could I add something about my opinion? Art - the real art - is possible only when an artist arrives to see behind the shadows of life and others find truth in what he has built…

When I read your interview to my students – which I translated completely in italian – my students understood the real passion for your work and appreciated your sincerity (the great silence in my classroom was very expressive, and they’re twenty-six teen-agers). Someone asked to me if it will be possible to meet you at our school. I’ve answered, honestly, that it would very difficult to organize - and probabily our poor public institute shouldn’t refund even the travelling expenses to you!
But if you’ll have a public exhibition in Italy I’ll come to see it and I’ll invite my pupils if it will not be too far (by the way, Milan offers very much from this point of view: for example there is the so called Mi-Art, a great exposition of contemporary art every year, in Spring). I’ve seen on the web your photobook about China but I hope to find more information about two originals which I liked in particular.
At last, can I admit that in your words, which I approve, I’ve seen something of myself? And as you, I hope to let to the others something meaningful in the future, through writing.
Finally let me say you gave to all of us a lot.
Please forgive the little ability to synthetize!
I’m grateful to you,
Best wishes,
Gabriella

Jared, you really do some beautiful work... I'm impressed... who'd have thunk it... an actor I've always admired turning into quite the photographer.

Dear Jared,
I’ve read (in italian) your answers to my pupils… They appreciated, so in the future the world will have new photographers! They asked me a complete translation of your interview to save in their personal documents, and I gave it. To complete my work I asked them to answer to this question: “What is for you making art?” Maybe the argument is difficult but students must learn to fly. This week-end they have to write to the answers, and I’ll read their composition next week. I’ll write to you their comments, if I can.
For now, thank you very much again for everything.
Ciao!
Gab

Dear Jared,
I’m sorry but I could read your letter only today. First of all, how can I thank you? Your answers are clear, personal and deep. I have read them with great interest.
So, tomorrow I’ll translate and read to my pupils your interview, and I’m sure they’ll be satisfied, and I believe that your answers will create in them some more curiosities. They will have to work inside… Maybe some of them one day will begin the career of photographer, difficult but so fascinating, especially when a person tries to reach the soul, the real essence of things. I’ll try to give to my pupils the sense of your personal research, so far from the crowd. I’ll write to you their impressions as soon as possibile.
Best wishes (ciao!)
Gabriella

Hi Jared,
as I have told you, my pupils asked me a lot of questions about your works. To some of them I tried to answer using the contents of your “profile” (from artreview.com), but others are still open (and it’s natural!). I summarized them in few selected arguments.
But first of all, can I thank you for your great kindness and consideration for my students?
Here are the questions:
- how much did you study to become a photographer and to arrive to such results?
- What do you like more of your work?
- In your opinion, what is the best subject for an interesting photo?
- When did you understand that you had a real passion for photography?
- Is it necessary to buy sofisticated, expensive cameras to obtain good results?
- What advise could you give to teen-agers like us who would begin the career of photographer?
My students appreciated very much your pictures and they said they are full of meaning (and it must be true, because it’s not simple to capture attention of teen-agers twelve-years old …). I tried to explain the deep link between painting and photography and the importance of culture, but it’s not enough, absolutely… you need talent, as well. Could you tell me more about this?
Thank you very much indeed.
Best regards!
Gab

Hi Jared,
my students liked very much your pictures (and they have some open questions). They defined your works fashinating and rich in meaning. They understood – I believe – what quantity of work inside them. Through some photos (for ex. Victoria falls, Malibu fire) I spoke about the concept of voyage, and by others I have spoken about conditions of China today (and I coudn’t ignore China after Olimpic Games). At last, some words about “Preparation for departure” (I appreciated!): the ideal conclusion for my lessons about voyage.
Thank- you, really
Gab.
