About my artwork

Art is Good for you, it Makes You Happy.

I am a performance artist. In a practice which is increasingly socially engaged I explore creative ownership, private and public rituals associated with creativity, and the mythology of the artist. I look at the role of the audience in the realisation of work. Investigating to what extent the relationship between producer & consumer can be interchangeable. I use performative work to open lines of communication between viewer, work and artist thus inviting the relationships between these elements to metamorphose. It is a great shame that people so often feel restricted by the idea that there is a prescribed method for engaging with creativity and that this method is the sole preserve of The Artist. In my work I offer viewers the opportunity to become involved in creative activities and ideas in order to encourage a dialogue about and contemporary art. I regularly use everyday, non-threatening materials; things that most people have access to, things that are fun and funny. In my last performance I asked viewers to chew bubble gum and then make pictures with it.
I am interested in the function of performance within art and life. I create work by adopting a character and then making work as that character. This method of working is produced through a mixture of techniques used by novelists, artists and actors. Each character has a distinct back-story, look, creative style and mission statement. Their work takes a variety of forms including performance, painting, installation, considerate graffiti (see CV “@ur own Convenience”), cartoons, and photography. (For further information some characters have their own “My Space” spaces*.)
I create these characters in order to explore the potential of performance as a tool for making art as well as a method for presenting it. The histories and motivations of the characters might be interesting to people who view their work, but the viewer doesn’t need to know anything about how it was made- or who it was made by- to engage with it.
I want my work to be beautiful, playful, entertaining and just a little enigmatic. I am utterly dedicated to making art accessible to as many people as possible to view, participate in and buy. I passionately believe that increased public involvement in art has the potential to enrich the cultural landscape and the quality of individual lives.
