NOURA DEBBOUCHE-CONTEMPORARY ARTIST

NOURA’S BIOGRAPHY

As all instinctive artists, Noura Debbouche started drawing very young when her oldest sister who is a Teacher of English asked to draw pictures for her lessons she used them as visual aids in her Class and students admired them. She was very keen on drawing and even her family noticed that. “In 1987 Held her first Solo Exhibition when she was fourteen years. During her childhood, she usually spent her summer holidays at her uncles’ house in the countryside where life was very simple but very exciting. She was attracted by the fascinating landscapes in the country; the mountains, the plants, the fields, the trees, the animals, the fresh air, the river and the feeling of spaciousness. All that had affected her in anyway. She was fortunate to have many adventures there. Everything was attractive and fascinating. The river which crosses the country where lived birds was bright but not very deep, ducks and some species of fish swimming inside. She was fond of watching with admiration the wonderful sunrise and sunset, the stars which shine and twinkle so high in the darkness of the night because her uncles’ wives used candles and oil-lamps. On the whole, everything was particular and that natural way of life pleased her and she enjoyed her childhood experiences there. She often wondered how would all those views become if they were painted. Since then, she began to paint by instinct. She is a unique and multi-talented artist because she is a painter, a photographer, a sculptor and a creative writer. She has projected to found a kid’s magazine. She is able to gratify her creative instinct and establish her individuality as a contemporary artist. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, as well as in Jordan, Algeria, and Ottawa, Ontario

ARTIST STATMENT

When I was young, exactly at the age of seven, I saw my mother who was making some traditional potteries with clay. At that time, I felt that this handicraft was really an art. Since then, I started to paint by instinct. I was young but I had dreams and I wanted to cope with anything I didn’t study art and I have no qualifications in this field. I didn’t graduate from any school of art but I could impose myself and show my talents through my exhibitions. I have high ambitions, so I traveled to different countries and made exhibitions in the Middle East and finally I settled in Canada. I was lucky to know other cultures and keep in touch with other peoples. All this has a great influence on my artistic vision and career. I discovered that the humanity share various civilizations, different cultures and customs but art remain a universal feeling. I saw the richness of the multi-cultural life through art, communication and the particular style of life. I feel myself like a bird who learns to fly by instinct and as the famous idioms says “we can lead a horse to the water but we can never make him drink it”. However, I am a highly skilled painter and I use the brush as well as my fingers prints are seen clearly on my paintings and everyone can notice that. Unfortunately, I have never been rewarded or received any prizes or grants, I didn’t despair.

Hi Noura,

thank you for all your comments on these pieces. It is very supportive of you. I think we made our show as bohemian as possible and I made the photos as a sort of document. I have sold quite a bit so I make a few prints for something popular. But I still don't know what to do with for the new year. The big galleries here are not as interested in this style of semi cubist work as they are for sort of Lucian Frued type portraits - so I am at the end of a long list of pretension. A brit living in Britain who is not British at all. A gift from the gods to never belong!! Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!

Best from Luke
