About my artwork
I strive to express the relationship between human and nature, human and earth, and human and universe through my art. Recent studies of the scientific proof that intellectual living as human in the universe is more rare and unique than we’ve imagined. I contemplate the meaning of human existence, its connection to the universe, as well as exploring the origin of our planet and its future in the universe.

For work on canvases, I use oil paint and some times ink, oil sticks and pastels. In order to demonstrate time change I use multi-layering of different mediums. These layers represent links to the past, present, and future. For works on Paper, I use water based Japanese pigment, Sumi ink, and color pencils. I use images and symbols found in space and the ocean. My frequent use of round and circular objects reflects their common occurrence in the universe.
Artists I like
Anselm Kiefer, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Frida Kahlo, Paul Klee, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Pierre Bonnard, Mark Rothko, Jean-Michel Baskia, Andy Warhol, Julie Mehreta, Matthew Richie, William Scharf, Jonathan Shahn, Florine Stettheimer...

Sonomi Kobayashi's paintings and drawings first draw the viewer in with their fluidity. They seem to flow from one piece into the other as if telling a story through a stream of consciousness. After spending some time with the work, each piece becomes its own character, telling its story through texture, color, depth, and technique. Every piece I have observed evokes a different emotion, providing the viewer with truly profound experience. I see Sonomi's work as world that is familiar, yet alien and unique. Ms. Kobayashi's work inspires me, and I feel that history will prove she is one of the most important artists of her generation.

Sonomi Kobayashi's use of geometrical elements rendering the idea of unsettled space and shifting marine environments, echo her concern with the nature of human race, its adaptability to change and its inherent search for survival. In the last 12 years Sonomi's work has developed both in subject matter and technique. The exploration of sculpture and installation has been beneficial to her works and is evident in her latest compositions. Her experience as an artist has been greatly enriched by her travels and her collaboration with other artists in the United States, Europe and Japan. Sonomi's works expose a professional degree of study and a serious interest from the artist in a constant process of evolution and growth.

Sonomi Kobayashi's works on paper unfold like dreams, or memory--combining a subtle and masterful use of color and using the elemental shape of the circle to remind us of the organic. There is playfulness here, too---a whimsicality that queries the bridge between the natural and man-made worlds, informed by the cross-pollination of Sonomi's native Japan and her adopted New York.
