Firstly let me welcome you and thank you for taking the time to share these moments with me; I know our time is one of the most precious things we have to share, so again thank you for sharing it with me.
Welcome to “Lily’s’ pad”, or should that be cyber-pad? Well wherever, or whenever you are reading this hope you enjoy the show!
I will give you a quick biog so maybe you will understand me a little more.
I have always been an artist, even from childhood I loved the surreal, faeries and the mystical arts and was always to be found; mainly alone, doing “something creative” as my parents would say!
I had a blissful childhood, but always had a lust for life outside the norm! Living in a village out on the moors in the middle of nowhere was probably the cause of this.
Life was very usual and unexciting for the next few years until in the 70’s the punk scene erupted and at last there seem to be life somewhere in the universe; at last there was the vibrant colour of rebellion smacking me in the face! At last people in the village had something else to gossip about apart from me, the strange girl who looked very pale and was probably a witch due to the fact I am of course left-handed; what did you expect? Aren’t most creative people sinister in some way?
After what seemed like a life sentence had passed, education and rules were over, and of course, most importantly I was old enough to escape, I rebelled, and with a friend went off to indulge myself in the world and all that it had to offer me, and boy was I in for a surprise!
I experienced lots of fantastic adventures along the way, but also encountered the darker side of life, which of course has had a vast effect on my own psyche and now that I am a woman, my own art reflects this. I also love the work of Frida Kahlo which again is her perception of her own tumultuous life; I really do empathise with her and she is still to this day, one of my most favourite artists. “Oh Frida, how I wish I had found you sooner! “.
One of the darker times was my marriage; and yes my wedding day was the day of the great storm 1987; why did I not listen to the Universe? She was trying to tell me something as my marriage ended in divorce due to mental and physical abuse but without that background I would not have become the person I am today.
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” they say!”… (Now why doesn’t that say “makes you more beautiful, or at least wealthier?” If that was the case you’d be looking at “one bloody stunning rich bitch!”
After, again, rebelling and running away, (well more hobbling at this point!) I found an inner strength and got my life together with just the clothes I stood up in and very little else, I got back on track and signed myself up for a fashion degree, then worked in the theatrical costumes and became the wardrobe mistress and assistant designer for the run of the Agatha Christie season with Roy Marsden; which was time consuming with all the dress techs; fittings etc; and of course unsociable hours and terrible pay there had to be something else for me; after all when was I going to do my art?
At this point I set myself up on the art path and decided to do a BA in fine Art, funding myself working as a “Builder bird” for my friends company, my interior design skills and of course my fantastic “cutting in” skills came into the fore which I loved and at that point I became a working artist as well...and yes I know all about caulking! So that my dear cyber friends is my life in a nutshell and you find me at this point in my life thinking about delivering my next commission, my new show in July; and a myriad of other things.(Must be the Gemini in me?)
I am not running away from life this time, I am running slap bang into the middle of it and giving it a bloody good kick; but how she kicks back is yet to unfurl, because you know she will! But hey it might be just the inspiration I need for that fantastic piece of work waiting to emerge!
