If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?: Conceptual, Drawing, Installation, Painting, Photography

I am...: an artist (working in painting mainly) based in London although originally from Birmingham (England).

About my artwork: During my Degree (Sunderland 1983-86) I just painted from windows where I lived and at the college. I went back to Birmingham after that, actually Chelmsley Wood -see Lynsey Hanleys 'Estates, an Intimate History' or alternatively chavtowns.com - but found it a difficult place to be so I got a job as a teacher in Essex. This gave me some stability and my real work probably started then. I painted stuff about my experiences growing up in Birmingham / Chelmsley / gang things / the football / violence / drugs and other such miseries.

I seemed to paint through this and on to focusing on the actual architecture of the environments I knew and other places like it or ones that I was drawn to.

All my work is personal, sort of anti-political and I paint probably because it might be the medium in which you are more likely to be solely responsible for your output.

While I am working though, once the composition is sorted, everythng seems to be about getting the colours right. The places I paint are not like the way I paint them in terms of colour ie they are much greyer and grimmer even when its sunny. That is the me bit really - trying to be positive through use of colour.

What exhibitions are good at the moment?: Nowt. The most recent best would be the Hopper and Tuymans at Tate Modern in London, a couple of years ago.
