Matug Aborawi is an African painter. He is an African painting from the shores of Spain. He keeps painting and painting these little boats, boats full of people arriving, empty boats with sad doves looking down, beaches from where people embark. Beaches from where people arrive. Beaches where strange craft drift in with the tide like upside down smiles. There are no words for the emptiness. The doves carry something away, a spirit, a story, perhaps a poem.

This painting has an endless line of people looking back. They have made the dreadful journey and they are back where they started, back on their own shores where the hell they were escaping is awaiting them. They were sent back by vacant bureaucrats after a journey that Matug´s paintings merely allude to. We have to fill in the story with our imagination. We have to imagine the horror of being sent back. We see in the long row of desperation the loss, the ones who didn’t make it. Being sent back is an admission of hopelessness.

Looking at this painting is like looking out from underneath the sea. There is a chaos and a feeling of being unsettled, a question mark in the air, a blurriness: a feeling that out there is lonely and desolate. Defeat hovers over the group like blue bubble-gum. The cross/stop-sign is like a door that is shutting over the horizon.

There is no end to the boat…it goes on and on with a mass of humanity looking out. Following the defeated vessel with the eye makes us look inward. Looking inward takes us down into the dark sea of our own longings to be free. We don’t know if we’re in the boat looking out or in ourselves looking down.
