I am...: Currently, Gordon lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. His works are exhibited in galleries in New York and New Jersey. He is part of an emerging group of international artists whose abstract works draw upon the global roots of painting, merging and fusing a diverse range of sources and traditions into an exciting contemporary abstract idiom.

About my artwork: Like a poem, my paintings begin with an observation, a feeling, a hunch or an idea, a memory and are then refined so that every color, every shape and form, every gesture is woven together. Like music my paintings begin with a theme or a phrase and evolve endlessly as an improvisational performance. Working with egg-oil emulsions, oil-resin varnishes, and oil-resin-beeswax, I build the paintings up in layers to create a luminosity or light that glows from within the painting. I make my own mediums as a way to connect with my materials, to appreciate them, to know them. Like taking apart a watch to put it back together to see the inside. Discovery, curiosity, playfulness.

Thanks for getting in touch - I especially like your series of small VV Park watercolours: lively, yet open, almost sparse - just enough, eh? It's the old "knowing when to stop" down to a tee.

I've started experimenting with watercolours (again) myself - I'm hoping I'm going to get somewhere this time. Not an easy medium to get to work for you, is it?

Have you seen my old friend Kane Cunningham's watercolours - he's doing some very lively stuff on old Northern English and Scottish estates, and has a great painting of the beach at Scarborough. They may be landscapes, but they're almost abstract: -

I think your work is successful because it doesn't make me apathetic about it. That piece took a turn even this weekend when it doubled in size - now there are 18 pieces ... and even more diverse. I wonder if this process becomes about the inspiration and the balance of form and expression .... I think so ....
