late night post from a bloated mind

o.k. i really appreciate the comments people have been leaving about the pleasure they experience from seeing my process. i love it. i am wondering why i have not done this before. the process is everything. i own none of the techniques i employ. i have nothing to guard. ideas float in the universe; they belong to us all. it is fun to share. the studio is such a special place to me, and to share it with others is to share some of the most special and sacred space in my life. thanks so much for engaging so generously with me through my photo journaling of "under my skin". and of course, stay tuned for more, including the design and construction process of the sculptural element of the show, the installation of the work in the gallery, and recordings of the engagement of the community with the work.

here we go

so here i go again. launching on another body of work. it's about co-dependency. i cannot wait to dive in. it is another autobiographical body, in some sense, though i will be doing my usual experiments with attempting to tie seemingly disparate idea altogether to build picture of the truth of co-dependency. it's body that has been inside me for a long time, but laid dormant without name. i am ready to make it now. i'll start my reading and research, probably get frustrated, attempt to throw out… Continue

peace from my piece

so i started and stopped. then i started. then i stopped and started again. i changed the name of my show. i changed the concept. i changed the studio i was making it in. i changed mediums. i changed my mind. i changed homes. i changed my approach to parenting. i changed my process for making art. i changed jobs. i changed my life. this is december through april. this is what i ended up making art about for my BFA show. the show i used to call "under my skin" became "mental maps". i worked tota… Continue

cashflow blockages and other barriers to artmaking

Sarah, my new studio assistant had a lesson in the fiscal perils of the artmaking process yesterday, at the expense of my pride and confidence. It was a good lesson, nonetheless, for both of us. We had planned to go supply shopping for paper at the place i know as heaven on earth, Hollander's Paper, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I wanted to introduce Sarah to the experience of being immersed in a vast store full of handmade papers from all over the world. We got there and found so many wonderful thing… Continue

processing the processing

i did not anticipate using artreview to process my own process. but that's what's happening, so I am going with it. i am having this really life-shifting shit come up through recording my process, through photography, voice recording and video. as i have recorded and played back these documentations, i began wondering why this is so fascinating, to hear my own voice, to see my own image talking back to me through time-space about something i have already experienced in real time? then tonight it… Continue

Thanks a lot for your comment Erin, I'm very flattered! I'm working on this new thing which involves more your type of installations instead of pure photography. I'd love to hear what you think. You can find it on http://www.alexandraverhaest.be/alexandraverhaest/Father.html. Now, considering your work. The concept I like the most in the work I have seen is the feeling of travel. First thought that sprung to my mind was that maybe you're using your pencil as a kind of symbolic antenna of things happening around you. Your work has a kind of "flâneur" quality. I'd like to see more of it, so please send me some links!
Cheers, Alex
