does art have the intrinsic power to heal us? or rather...are all artists bad before they become artists?

Thank you all for your support and words to keep me thinking. Noel, that is why, as referred to by Carol Novack, I quoted from Wallace Stevens. His poem about finding beauty in putrification in the... Continue

What do you think of this painting, by Matisse? "Apollo"

I was doing a series inspired by Greek Gods and fell on this. I wonder. I think it is beautiful but done in 1953. Is it still relevant? Is it design, decorative or fine art?

A compliment to an art "dealer"(Sherry Steiner, ArtsModerne.com)

I am having a solo show at Le Petit Musee, Housatonic, Massachusetts. Sherry Steiner is the gallerist for this show and for ArtsModerne and for artist/alliance collaborators. If you google Sherry Steiner I think that you will get all of her informati… Continue

Keeping an Open Mind about other Artists

I spent the other day at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and it was so uplifting. I saw the Newman Collection of Mid 20th Century Modern Art. I really liked the Arp, the Goodman, The Ryan, the Roszak and Tobey. Everything there was beautiful. I walke… Continue

Spontaneous Musings about SUccess and Tragedy

I was shocked and dismayed to read that Heath Ledger died, apparently by accidental overdose of prescription sleeping pills. He lived in SOHO, a cold, commercial, expensive area that used to be reserved for warehouses and bums many years ago. Now it ha… Continue

The Cold and Hot World of an artist

We are so fortunate to have opportunities to share our thoughts and work. We are so lucky to have the gift of creation. So why am I feeling so miserable? How can I give myself a big pat on the back for the effort and not worry about the results. I ge… Continue

I guess I am o.k. Thanks for noticing. I was up in Massachusetts for a few weeks and
just had nothing to say but through paint. I am back in Manhattan for a few days and
then will go up to Rhode Island for two days this weekend. Then back to NYC. I
enjoy the hubbub here but do better spiritually in the mountains. I think I had a nightmare
that we had no ice on the North Pole this summer. Or was it true? I was quite upset.

Well, I do not know how I can save the planet but I can create work that is from
recycled materials or with the right theme. Let's do it!

I did not find your comments insensitive at all. I would have to direct you to some
literature on color therapy and mental health as I know all about it but out of practice
in writing about it today. My regular email is amycohenbanker@earthlink.net and
maybe later on I can give you references on that. I do not really think about those theories when I work. I work from process and intuition and experience. I pick
a color that pleases me and then continue on and on from there. I have noticed that
the seasons, the location, the geography is influential first. Obviously, who I am
working near influences me. I am emotionally stronger than when I was younger but
I still feel the energy of others. I am truly an artist so my painting and self expression
seems to always come first. I will be interviewed tomorrow morning in Massachusetts
at 8:00 a.m. for a few hours about all of this by Judy Rosley. She is also an alternative
healer. I cannot tell you quickly about color and not everyone agrees. If you give me
another email address I will send you some attachments. I do not know psychology of
shapes. I work from my physical heuristic experience. If I am driving on hills I notice
I can paint with more circles and turns. If I am working near a highway and the river
and bridges then I do a few like that. But color is another thing. I prefer bright colors
and light and white but I just did one very dark one "Orpheus and Eurydice" in order
to express that narrative. So I work from narrative and to do fine art examples of
the poem or theme, not really illustrations, but fraught with color. Art therapy is different from fine art as a profession. Also, if I would do a commission then I would
take the client's ideas into account.

I understand. I am basically healthy but I have had too much experience with friend's
and family in hospitals. It makes me value the small things. I appreciate all levels
of life and try to stay optimistic! I used to do a lot of community service with people
but lately I have thrown myself into my art except for community art shows. I do find
that I go through phases. I am now involved with the health and special medical services in Great Barrington , MA. for VIM. Last year I worked with senior care and art
therapy in some Nursing Homes in Rockland County, NY and New Jersey. I feel as if I
deserve to spend my time painting since it has taken me this long to get the time to do
this. I am glad that we are now friends.
