I am...: Built in 1897, originally a library, the grade II listed building became an arts centre in the 1960s. Following a reburbishment by Tony Fretton Architects, Camden Arts Centre re-opened to the public in 2004. The beautiful and sensitively designed building combines the original victorian gothic features with a contemporary urban design to enhance space and light. The new galleries attract artists of the highest calibre, able to display a broad range of work including installation, film and video, light sensitive drawings and sculpture.

Opening times:
Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm
Wednesday 10am-9pm
Closed Mondays & Bank Holidays

Late opening every Wednesday until 9pm includes free talks, film screenings and live art performances. The Café and Bookshop are also open.

Tal R& Claire Barclay
02 May to 29 June 2008

Tal R's exuberant paintings challenge the fundamentals of painting using a collage of shapes and imagery and a reduced colour palette. Over 200 etchings reveal influences including the drawings of Matisse, the Holocaust and children’s books.

From the same generation of painters as Peter Doig and Chris Ofili, Tal R brings personal experience back to the canvas.

Claire Barclay's new sculptural installation is inspired by the architecture, light and function of Camden Arts Centre. Her sensitive configurations of objects combine hand-crafted and industrial materials.

By using techniques associated with alternative lifestyle cultures and non-fine art practices, she raises questions about today's commodification of crafts.
