If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Drawing
I am...
not normal. I have been drawing since the age of 4 and spend all day, every day, drawing. I was born in New York and have lived in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. I have made my home in London since 1986.
About my artwork
I wanted to paint like the 17th century Flemish Masters, but went to school at a time when conceptual art was all the rage. I cut classes and tried to teach myself how to paint like Memling, Durer, or Van Eyck but failed. Then I developed a unique way of drawing when I was a student traveling around Europe. It mimicked the egg-tempera painting technique used by the Masters: thousands of tiny little lines to build up an area of tone. It's an insane way of drawing, but I'm able to create amazingly detailed, layered work. My drawings take longer to create than most paintings, but they're richer and have more depth.
Artists I like
I adore Jan Van Eyck and think his triptych, "The Lamb of God", is the best painting in the Universe. I also love Goya, Durer, Rembrandt's etchings, Memling, and Kathe Kollwitz. The photos of Diane Arbus inspired me to opt for black and white as my colors.
Interests
I love to draw. When I'm not drawing, I'm sleeping.
