About my artwork
In my artworks I use words and images from cell phones and mechanical parts derived from old typewriters. I am interested in inter-personal communication processes, particularly how contemporary technology has affected these by way of sms and emails which often bear only the most basic letters and words. With this new technology, where speed is the key strategy for saving time, language often paradoxically presents as much a hindrance to communication as a pathway for it.
In the days when manual typewriters were used, a slower form of communication demanded greater reverence and respect in our manner of addressing people. My connection with typewriters has a very personal link. For many years my late father was General Manager of Olivetti in South Africa. He had an analytical mind and a great love for words and language and read the Shorter Oxford Dictionary for pleasure. Communication with him was difficult for me and our relationship was a stormy one. In an odd way this has informed my art which deals with communication and the barriers to it in contemporary communication media.
Dysfunctional, contradictory aspects within communication intrigue me and inform my artwork. I move between old and new modes of making where some works are hand-crafted and labour intensive and thus very tactile, while others are digitally created and thus far less tangible. I try to engage with these two extremes.
Artists I like
William Kentridge, Walter Oltmann, Damian Hirst, Louise Bourgeois and loads of others
The centre of the artworld is
London, nowhere and everywhere

My feelings precisely!! I have also been thinking I need a sponsor! I have only shown my work in South Africa until now...although i have some in London and in Perth, but they're in the homes of my sons, both of whom live overseas.
Funny about the rain...also been raining all day here. Not heavily though. Just fine, wet drizzle, which makes everything very wet and dark. I chatted to my sister who lives in California, and she says its raining there too! nice to hear from you!

Hi Paula, thank you for the appreciation.Concerning the competition no I didn't apply because it's complicated to send work in the States & if not done through a gallery the costs would have been too high.Uptil now I've been exhibiting more in Germany & Europe, somehow easily accessible. It's a pity though cause I'd love to show my work on a broader basis because the themes are socio -cultural & socio-political based. Definitely have to try & find a generous sponsor!!! Have to go to an opening now. Take care & have a good Sunday!Raining cats & dogs here........!

hi, i did answer on a blog, hoping it may help, razeea, but will put it here as well. sorry to hear you've lost your friends on artreview...! i was reading some other comments, somewhere on artreview, (not sure where) the other day, and saw a number of people had the same problem.
But as far as the blog is concerned, i clicked on "my blog" at the top left, and then went to "add new blog post" (or similar wording) on the top right, then a box opened to write this blog. ...good luck, razeea! hope it comes right!!
