I am...
I am a site-specific artist. I’m inspired by the areas where art can be placed, not the need to fit existing objects into designated locations. When I see a site, I conceptually fill it in my mind’s eye. I focus on the space’s character and how best to use its potential. My goal is to have the viewer experience the space itself through the content I create. I employ textures and light, as well as ambient sounds and fragrances, to stimulate as many senses as possible. I want the viewer to be aware that something is happening within the space. Then I want the viewer to connect to the space and its contents. Finally, and most importantly, I want the viewer to internalize the entire encounter. Each of us has gaps within ourselves that are just waiting to be filled with new, enlightening experiences. I fill those inner, personal spaces with my external, art-filled spaces.
About my artwork
Art is the core of my being. I embrace the idea that art is visual and can cross all boundaries, languages, cultures and communicate without words. As an artist, I believe we have the opportunity to be global communicators. Public art opens the door for the communication to begin. Public art has unlimited potential to facilitate collaboration and integration of multiple disciplines. It can bring people together in meaningful and productive ways while it can enhance and unite environments.
My approach in life is first to seek understanding and then to be understood. When I look at art I automatically visually break down the processes involved in creating it. I take note of the mechanical methods and mediums used. I drive myself personally to grow as a person and artist. I often incorporate design challenges in the exhibits I create. When I get an idea to communicate something with my art, I ask my self "What medium would best suit the final design?" Having no experience working in a particular medium has never stopped me in creating the work as I envision it. The over riding theme in all my designs is growth, in myself as well as the viewer. I enjoy creating art that kindles memories, reflection and internal dialog.
My desire is to create works with a strong vision that never becomes obsolete. I am inspired by the challenges that public art can offer to the designer and artist. The challenges of space, permanency, and reflection of community will always drive the design of the public art projects in unique directions. The reward in public art is the collaboration process in creating a design. The collaboration between clients and design teams constantly challenges the design direction. The collaboration fosters exploration and discovery and establishes it as the foundation of every project. Public art is a passion of mine. I enjoy being the facilitator to help the community communicate amongst one another through art. I find the uniqueness of each opportunity in public art and innate challenges exciting. I look forward to the quest of designing art that satisfies the visions of all the people involved. Finding answers and solutions is what make life fun and is an inherent pleasure of Public art.
