Why Do Artists Promote Their Art To Other Artists?

Since I have been selling my art online, I often become frustrated after joining different 'art gallery' sites when I receive a promo about other artist's works.
Do they think I am going to buy their art work? That's like a car dealer trying to sell another car dealer one of his/her cars.
As artists we all would love to sell more art, but I'm not sure another artist is your most lucrative customer.
What do other artists think about this topic?

Oh, I left my calling card in case there are other non-artists viewing these pages.--:)

JP, I don't believe that " artists are the only other people in the world that truly understand it(art)."

Heck, sometimes I don't understand some of the art work I've created. It just happens.

Besides i don't ask the opinion of other artists with regard to the art that i have created.

And, if someone asks me my opinion of their art wrok, I always reply, " What you the artist thinks and feels is most important!"

So you think that no one should give feedback? That is quite fascinating, for me that would mean the same as never developing as an artist.

thats my opinion too....There are so many people who have no understanding for creative processes, so that we can be happy to be able to talk with each other about our work and ambitions....if we want to.

I am an artist, Gallerist, Broker as well as a collector. Have been doing shows for 20 years and 130+ shows. I collect but not very pricey items and most are paintings and prints from friends.
I think you need to consider the collector or artist with limited funds and maybe have items available for those individuals.

I think it's important to share your art with other artists. Does an author read another author's stories? Do actors watch other movies than their own? Does a teacher learn from other teacher's lectures? It's easier for me to talk to another artist about my work because I am not thinking in the back of my mind, is this person going to buy or "BS".

My art is put up everywhere for all to say or even take. I've put these wood stickers up everywhere from SF to NY and everywhere else I have been. All for you to see. so why wouldn't I want to share with all other artists. Besides In some ways we are all on the same team, right?
GGGGOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!

collectors, gallerists always ask questions like ' what does this all mean?, or what is the story behind it all?, and i say "it has no story. it is found wood and what i have done with it. Artists always ask about materials used and some ask 'do you often cut yourself?' questions like these are easier to answer. I like showing to other artists to keep me motivated. showing to gallerists and collectors only to make money.$$$$$.

as a gallerist, i ask those questions because my collectors ask them too. i think, if you want your art to sell, it's important to give us something to contemplate in addition to a pretty visual - a good idea adds value to your work.

"Beauty will be conceptual or it will not be at all" - Congratulations Micaela and thank you. I never thought I'd hear a Gallery echoing that war cry!

HI Klaire, don't get frustrated about other artists getting in touch with you, you should be flattered. They are contacting you with there work to network, to show you there work so that you may learn something from the experience (perhaps). Also because they LIKE your work. Viewing other artists work is quite essential in the learning process of developing. Do you want to develop? Have you already got to where you want to be? If so, than that's great. Hopefully they got something out of your work? It's good to contact other artist's. You just don't know when that curator will call.

I see from the comments that this question has stirred an interest: Good!
And to answer Clay Smith, good heavens no, I am not through learning.

And, I think all of your art work is beautiful!
