Why Do Artists Promote Their Art To Other Artists?

Since I have been selling my art online, I often become frustrated after joining different 'art gallery' sites when I receive a promo about other artist's works.
Do they think I am going to buy their art work? That's like a car dealer trying to sell another car dealer one of his/her cars.
As artists we all would love to sell more art, but I'm not sure another artist is your most lucrative customer.
What do other artists think about this topic?

Oh, I left my calling card in case there are other non-artists viewing these pages.--:)

Art is more than just selling and buying! It's also a matter of networking and relationships....

Hi Lars,

I agree, but the promo's I receive are always about selling art at reduced costs, or a new art piece for sale. Or where someone's new art showing is at.

No, one ever includes a convo about relationships, or networking.--:)
Now, that would be nice--:)

Some people behave in an irritating manner both online and in the real world, that can't be avoided. But I must admit I have never been offered to buy any art on any sites I have joined and if people invite me to see their shows I usually think that is nice of them. I can understand the salesman part, but do you really get irritated when people tell you where they have a show?

I also think that we shouldn't discount a cohort of people we create art for other than purely for public consuption... other artists! we are part of a group that is supportive and I believe we provide focus and context to one another's practice, so we can be different, or fell belonging. I agree with Lars but I would also add beliefs and our own philosophies on appraoches to life.
(it's a very good question/debate)

Well I don't mind other artists sending me info about buying thier work. There may be a chance that you see it and fall in love with a piece. I at times send promos out to people who are and aren't artists and my usual reaction to getting promotional emails and such from other artists is basically "There is someone who wants it just as bad as me" or "It is great to see artists working hard to sell and promote thier asses off" that is the way I see it :)

I have to agree. I have swapped work with other artists because we shared a mutual appreciation for one another's talent and couldn't possibly hope to afford them by monetary means. It is difficult (actually feeling futile) to sell work unless you find yourself situated among the rich or connected. But I have found a support system among my fellow artisans through the gallery sites. Many, once a true rapport has been established, have made connections for me. So the benefit is relevant albeit not necessarily a monetary one.

Why Do Artists Promote Their Art To Other Artists?
a. Vanity overwhelms intelligence
b. Desperation overwhelms discretion
c. No on else will look at it.

I think that people who are most interested in art are often artists themselves. We also like to support the cause, the culture and community of art. I mean, those "regular" people like art... as long as it looks good over their sofa, but real art can be hard to coordinate with the drapes.

i think there is nothing wrong about, some famous artists ve found that exchanging works with other or if rich enough, to buy it is a good investment.

I like to share my work with other artists because they are the only other people in the universe that will truly understand it...It is different than liking it or buying it. No one but another artist knows the journey and it feels good when they comment on it, be that comment good or bad. It gives membership and comfort to a world that pretty much does not understand the creative process and all of it's facets.

Fair enough JP but I'd hate the idea of making art for artists or any sort of illuminati. Do we not bleed? I don't believe that anyone can be an artist anymore than I believe that anyone can be a lawyer or a burglar or a strongman in the circus but I do believe that art should be open to anyone with an open mind. And oddly enough you'll find some very closed minds amongst the artists on this site.
