Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

I went to the Exhibition at the R.A. yesterday-has anyone else been to this?Actually, the print section was good-everyone loves tigers! Tracy Emins Gallery is not so shocking -despite the warning for under 18's and seemed almost out of date! The best thing is Jeff Koons blue egg and the reflections of the gallery's ceiling. Check into the Hammershoi(sorry about the spelling) exhibition -the amazing danish artist-a recluse whose treatment of light is stunning. I also met students from the school of the R.A. to tell them about our new web site-www.art-bidder.com-let me know what you think! soo

I think Emin might be mildly amused by your "wide birth" Scott. Was it Freudian or intentional or both? Sexism shocks. And racism...and intolerance and well.....
all the old vices, really.

I suppose the real question is - does Emin care for you? Or me, for that matter. Somehow I doubt it.

Thanks for your fulsome explanation, Scott. I'm not a great fan either, although I like the honesty of line in her drawings and her installations do make their points. To be honest, I suspect in the fullness of time the success of much of that generation will be viewed as the triumph of marketing over meaning. The real artwork was persuading a generation of jaded and generally clueless critics to buy into the whole tenuous idea of Britart. And we still shiver in its cold shadow.

May I beg to differ with you on "shock value" however? If art cannot impact as forcefully as media news - albeit in a different way - then we should all give up, go home and grow vegetables. Marrows perhaps. How Freudian is that?

Hi Scott. Thanks for having a look at the site and for your comments. I know that there are sites which appear to be free but with www.art-bidder.com you can put on as much of your art as you like and not be charged more than the £20 per year. It's also dedicated solely to art so you don't have to wade through all sorts of other random items before reaching what you actually want.

Back to Emin, were it not for Victorian interest in prurience (still a hangover in our society unfortunately), she wouldn't have made a splash in the first place.
Take care,
Sue
