Exquisite Corpse project

Hello everybody!

I asked for ideas for collaboration, and we got a great one from Marty McCutcheon (check the previous discussion for referral).

He suggested we make a video version of the Exquisite Corpse (a method invented by the surrealists. For those who wants to know more about this, check the oracle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse).

This is not something that hasn't been done before, but I think it's an interesting first experience of collaboration between artists from artreview.

So it would work like this: one artist makes a 60 seconds video and send the last 10 seconds to an artist he/she chooses (we just have to decide who will be this first artist, maybe Marty could start, or me). The artist who receives the video will make his/her 60 seconds starting with the 10 seconds of he previous artist. He/she is allowed to work with this 10 seconds in any way he/she wants. And then complete with 60 seconds of his own work. Once finished his/her part, he/she will send the last 10 seconds to the next artist, chosen by him/her.

Please let me know if this is clear enough!

I'll post the rules for participation soon.

RULES FOR THE EXQUISITE VIDEO CORPSE PROJECT (open for suggestions!)

1. All participating artists must be on artreview and members of the Video Artists Group. If you want to invite someone you know from outside, please make sure he/she signs up to artreview and become a member of the group prior to start the project.

2. They all should have samples of their video work on their artreview profile.

3. All videos excerpts used on the project must be original material shot and edited
by the participating artists.

4. It's preferable that all video is originally shot for this project and not previously used in other projects.

5. The resulting video is propriety of all participating artists and may be exhibited by any of them, but always with credits for all the artists. All artists must be notified about each screening and/or exhibition.

6. The preferable video format for this project is Quicktime files (codec DV NTSC). You may shoot in any format, but the final render should be this. The shared 10 seconds files should be also in this format.

7. The files sharing must be done through www.yousendit.com . Through this website, you can easily send files up to 100MB. The sign up is free.

8. You can choose any artist from the group to be the one to receive the last 10 seconds of your video. BUT it's preferable that this artist be from a different country from yours. Just to make the interaction more interesting!

9. You can choose any artist from the group and let him/her know that you want him/her to receive your video. If the invitation is accepted, he/she must send you the email address in order to receive the file by yousendit.

10. Let's keep everybody posted about who's presently working on the project. We better not take too long to make each video (1-2 weeks for each artist would be great).

11. Don't show to any participating artist the rest of your video, until the project's end.

12. The project ends when we reach 25 artists participating, or before that if we're out of interested people.

13. Once this happens, all videos made must be sent to me (Kika), so I can put together the whole 25 minutes final video.

14. The genre is open to any experimental one - video art, experimental animation, video performance, video dance, video essay etc. There are no themes. The only rule is: integrate the piece of video you got from the last artist in the best way that you can, and continue it with your own video. The final video will be a patchwork of all these short videos, but hopefully the collected videos can be 'stitched' together thanks to this method of sharing.

15. The videos may contain sound or not, it depends of your concept.

Any doubts? Am I forgetting something?

Kika, Thanks for all the thought and energy you're putting into this. I love your enthusiasm. And I also love rules- They're good to follow, fun to bend, and if they get broken, it doesn't always have to hurt.

My only doubt is regarding the quantity of participants, 25 artists. At 1-2 weeks each, that'll take 6-12 months before anyone sees the "unfolded" final work. I might suggest beginning with 3-5 participants, and having a 'finished' piece in a couple of weeks. Seeing a result may encourage others to join in.

There could be numerous 'cadavers' underway at any given time, some complex and long term with many contributors, others quick and crude.

Thanks again, Kika for your energy, and "everyone else"- what do you think? I joined 'yousendit' in about five minutes- free and easy. There are currently 67 members in this group- are there 3-5 ready to go?

You're absolutely right, Marty! We can do more than one experience like this. So let's start with a few artists and see what happens. I think 5 is a good number.
I'm thinking about getting started without waiting for everyone to manifest themselves... What if we choose who we want to send the video to just by watching their videos here in artreview, then send a personal invitation asking if the artist agrees to participate?
Say you start doing your video. Just choose somebody, send him a message and see what happens. How about that?

we could try skype too, but I've had many problems with file transferring trough skype. Errors during the transfer. yousendit is also free, and it actually stores the file for a week, so you have a problem downloading it, you can try again later. I think it's quite easy. But it's just a suggestion, if someone prefers to work with skype, no problem!
I just put the rules down in an attempt to organize things... but like marty said, we can bend them :)

WOW! This is interesting .. I think we should set up a deadline for this , like particular date ..

hi kika, yes i think this is interesting, but i agree that 25 artists are far to much and the project will never see the light. i have been collaborating with other artists over the last 15 years, but somehow i enjoy it more when i can still relate to the whole project and that is certainly for any artist, so, to cut long blabla short, cut down on the number of artists .... and the choice somehow, has to make sense, be enriching for all

yes, that's already agreed, less artists and a faster project totallly makes sense! If the project works out fine, we can do it again, other versions, with different artists, with themes, I don't know. It's just a first experience and I'm sure it will be quite exciting to work on a collaboration with people from such different backgrounds. I've also worked many times in collaboration, but one thing that attracts me on this project is that we don't have to all agree with one another; we can retain our own styles and personal interests.
Let's see what happens! It's an experience, really. I'm more excited about the process itself, I'm not that worried about the result.

NEW RULE: MAX OF 5 PARTICIPATING ARTISTS (at least for this first version of the project).
So we can have the result faster.

Good idea Kika!

I'm waiting some news.
Thanks Kika for this initiative!!!
That'll be very interesting!

Just a question: the first 60 sec could be viewed by all participants?

I'm there Kika. What do I do now? I think 25 artists is just about right butI'm flexible. Great rules BTW.
