The role of the artist documenting the torment and glory of war has diminished since the rise of media & broadcasting. This talk discusses art in contemporary times, the nature of conflict and the role of the media in the current digital era.
In the classical era, artists were called upon to narrate war, illustrating the height of suffering and glory in battle. Modern conflicts, however, are broadcast continuously by a vast array of media sources and the role of the artist has clearly shifted. How does the contemporary artist make art in a time of war? How do artists critique the spectacle of war without recreating it? Contemporary artists and photographers discuss art made in the context of Iraq and Afghanistan. Featuring Geert van Kesteren, and Omer Fast and An My-Le introduced by Kate Bush, Head of Barbican Art Galleries. Chaired by TJ Demos, Critic and Lecturer, University College, London.
