The National Endowment for the Arts has released a report detailing how women artists in the US earn less than men, a trend that is strongest in the most competitive art capitals like Los Angeles and New York. The
report (scroll down for the link to download the PDF) finds:
* women earn $0.75 for every dollar earned by men (women workers in general earn $0.77 for every dollar earned by men)
* there were 919,000 women artists in 2005, making up 46 percent of all artists – a figure comparable to the percentage of women in the general labour force.
* states with low populations and a low cost of living often had high concentration of artists – and of those artists a high percentage were female.
* the pay gap between men and women increases with age
* women artists are as likely to be married as other women, but less likely to have children
* Between 2003 and 2005, women made up 43 percent of all photographers and 22 percent of all architects – an increase of 11 and 7 percent respectively since 1990.
