The Public, a troubled new gallery in West Bromwich, faces battle for public bail out

The Public, a new contemporary art gallery in West Bromwich, UK, which has already been saved from bankrupty once, remains closed after its aborted opening in June when the hi-tech 'interactive' galleries immediately broke down. Now, The Public – designed by architect Will Alsop – faces a battle to get any more public funding to make up for the shortfall of £60,000 per month that it expect to generate in ticket revenues. 'They needn't bother coming to us,' local councillor Steve Eling, told Building Design. 'If the gallery doesn't work, it doesn't bloody work. If there was any request for further money, it's likely [the council] would turn it down.' The Arts Council has given £500,000 to the gallery so far this year. The Public still expects to open fully at the end of the year.

Does anyone really care. It's OK for all those council members who will retire on a final pension to match their already inflated salaries. It seems to be ok to take that for the rest of their fat of the land lives, out of the pockets of their council tax payers. Still, one rule for them, and screw the public, as always.
