Zineb Sedira discusses Floating Coffins, a new 14-screen installation on view at Iniva, Rivington Place, London, as part of her exhibition Currents of Time. The work was filmed on the beautiful but little-known coastline of Mauritania, a birdwatcher’s paradise and shipping graveyard – many of the world’s ships are sent there to be beached and broken up. The films are also shadowed by the fact that the boats, and the harbour city of Nouadhibou, have become a way station for African migrants trying to reach Europe through the Canary Islands. You can see a clip from Floating Coffins here.
Sedira was born in France to Algerian parents and travelled to live in Algeria; the crossing of the sea has marked a significant theme in her work since Saphir (2006). Her exhibition runs until 25 July.
Floating Coffins was commissioned by New Art Exchange, Nottingham, and produced by Artsadmin.
