The shortlist for the fifth biannual Artes Mundi prize – which awards artists with socially engaged practice – has been announced. Miriam Bäckström (born 1967, Sweden), Tania Bruguera (born 1968, Cuba), Phil Collins (born 1970, Great Britain), Sheela Gowda (born 1957, India), Teresa Margolles (born 1963, Mexico), Darius Mikšys (born 1969, Lithuania) and Apolonija Šušteršič (born 1965, Slovenia) were chosen by selectors Anders Kreuger, curator at MHKA in Antwerp and Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, curator of contemporary art at Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. They were picked from a 576-strong longlist of nominations and will feature in an exhibition at Wales’s new National Museum of Art in October, with the winner of the £40,000 prize announced in November. All other shortlisted artists will receive a new award of £4,000 each. Yael Bartana was the 2010 winner.
