I am...
a visual art practitioner, mother, family member, friend, fellow, and teacher, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
About my artwork
Sofia Greff, Frankfurt. Born 1975 in Alba Julia/Rumania. Fine Art studies in Kassel and Frankfurt, Meisterschülerin of Prof. Ayse Erkmen, Städelschule Frankfurt/Main, and MA in Visual Performance at Dartington College of Arts. Received scholarship from the German National Merit Foundation. Art work based in Drawing and Performance.

At the beginning there is the curiosity and fascination about how the appearance of things changes depending on its relations.
My works mirror the astonishments, contradictions and irritations caused by this phenomenon.

I see my life running on and in a multitude of platforms and frames which cross and inform each other. Privacy, intimacies, fears, hopes, trivialities and embarrassments are all woven into my work. Life's circumstances force me to work with a minimum of materials, mainly ordinary and simple things related to the respective site or idea. My art stems from a curiosity and fascination about how things function together in a variety of different possible connections, how they appear, how the unfolding broadness of possible interpretations cause contradictions, irritations and astonishments. The continuous transformation and alteration of perception touches my emotional state, and it changes my beliefs steadily and constantly. There seems to be no absolute. Instead there exists a perpetual inconstancy.

With my interest in relationships between things, the ephemeral and in human instability, my work has evolved into being more instantaneous and improvised. The intense feeling of being 'on stage' and sharing the moment with an audience, to have witnesses to a work coming into being, this is what forms the basis of my work within performance art. Drawing is a life long habit. During my MA study I researched the relationship between performance and drawing, as well as focusing on the aspects of time, space, development and process. Drawing can quite literally subsume me. For my eye the line becomes a material, like dental floss, water, or even pleats. The pencil can therefore be replaced by other tools, for instance, my body. The surface of the work can also become anything - paper, the floor, a window, a mirror, or even just a retina.
Inquiring into the habitual use of body and objects, my work often unearths an absurd emergence. By exploring the many possible relations between things through performing, I try to find the centre of the work out directly in front of an audience, making visible the process and allowing their senses to perceive the work on different levels.

My ideas and realisations adapt to the specific situation and site, as well as to my present emotional and physical state. This makes my work ingenuous, and also unpredictable.
Artists I like
Tereza Margolles, Sophie Calle, Lila Karbovska, Bas Jan Ader, Ayse Erkmen, lots more...

Hi Sofia. I like your work too. In a discourse characterised by self hollow irony, I'm excited by existential self referentiality! I can't stand art that doesn't take art/ists seriously, even if the medium is humour. I'm glad there's life after Dartington!

Well, I've not been here for some time because I've been BUSY! Yes. I don't run it, I just supply some of the info to the tweet master. In addition, we have a myspace page which is serving as a…See More
