I am...: a German Artist who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Marc studied Philosophy in Munich and Berlin and Art at the Art Academy in Munich and multimedia the Media Academy in Berlin. Over the last years Marc Schmitz was developing Art projects internationally with priority in Asia. Since 2004 Marc Schmitz works with his installation project Spaces. On the occasion of the Biennale in Busan he developed a walk-in sculpture that allows for a new and unusual experience of space within a lively environment. Having entered the sculpture, the visitor perceives only the light blue interior of the funnel and the sky. In the next years Marc followed the eternal idea realizing his Spaces from Ulaanbaatar (2005), Mongolia to Sculpture Quadrennial Riga, Latvia 2008, the MoMA in Shanghai and Land/Art in New Mexico U.S. 2009 Marc Schmitz suspended this form into a mesh structure (Spaces N°5, Baku) Azerbaijan 2009 and on the occasion of artist in residence at Yatoo Biennial in Korea. His work was supported by institutions as ifa, Goethe etc. and awarded with the first prize for Art For Expo 2000 World Expo in Hanover, Germany, and in Cairo, with the special prize of the jury, 10th Cairo Biennial, amongst others.

About my artwork: Any typical space is constructed by typical social conditions. Every part of consciousness is included. Images of space are dreams of society. My recent projects have focused on finding and interpreting unclaimed or contested public space(s), and on reading the importance of the spatial relationship to both personal and shared-cultural memory. The stories told in those bare spaces reveal alternate possibilities for the human experience – and particularly our experience of urban zones. My work is oriented toward the public realm, is collaborative and generative relies on ethnographic and art-historical research, and takes advantage of both contemporary and historical forms of artistic media.
