If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Film, Installation, Photography, Video
I am...
...a Brazilian new media artist born in 1976.

Graduated in Cinema and Video from the University of Sao Paulo (2000); further film study at UCLA, Los Angeles (2002).

My videos have been exhibited and awarded prizes in more than 80 festivals in 30 countries. Among the awards I received: Best Video at Videoformes New Media & Video Art Festival (France), Best Experimental Documentary at Sopot Independent Film Festival (Polland), Best Experimental Video at Cineamazonia Festival (Brazil), Honorary Award at Alucine Toronto Latino Media Festival (Canada) and Honorary Award at International Experimental Film Festival Carbunari (Italy).

In 2005, my first documentary feature film, "Woman Cries Out!", received the Best Film Award at both the CineEsquemaNovo (Brazil) and Cineport (Portugal) festivals. It was also nominated for the UNESCO Breaking The Chains Award for Best Film on the Theme of Slavery and its Outcomes.

I have participated in about 30 solo and collective exhibitions in Brazil, Canada, USA, Spain, Poland, France, Portugal and Sweden with videos, installations, performances and photos.

I have been awarded the following grants: Support for Production in Visual Arts - São Paulo Arts Council; Support for Production - Recife Art Week; Exhibition Program - São Paulo Cultural Center; and Cultural Diffusion and Exchange Program - Brazilian Ministry of Culture. I have been nominated for the Sergio Motta Award of Art and Technology (2007) and the Nascente Art Award (2000).
About my artwork
I work primarily with video and photography.

I'm concerned with examining the connections between the camera, subject, author and viewer. I'm interested in issues such as the construction of identity, communication and voyeurism. I also investigate how the relationship between our body and the surrounding world (ie. nature or urban settings and culture) shapes our identity.

My greatest challenge is to find new forms of narrative by confronting established film language. I construct narratives, strategies and perceptions of reality, in search of fresh ways to connect with the viewer, defying his/her own perception of the world and proposing thought-provoking sensorial and emotional experiences.

This year I've been also busy with the Exquisite Corpse Video Project, a collaboration project with several international artists that met here in artreview. More info at www.artreview.com/profile/excorpse

Dear Kika,
How are you? How's it going with ExCorpse project?
I am interested in screening ExCorpse in Iran if you are interested. Though there are some gallery guidelines here for nudity and such that may prevent us from exhibiting all the works if such images exist in the project.
Is there a website I can watch them all to be able to say more?
Also is there a new ExCopse on the way I can participate as an artist?
Please let me know what you think,
Take care,
Sohrab
