If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Film, Installation, Photography, Video
I am...
...a Brazilian new media artist born in 1976.

Graduated in Cinema and Video from the University of Sao Paulo (2000); further film study at UCLA, Los Angeles (2002).

My videos have been exhibited and awarded prizes in more than 80 festivals in 30 countries. Among the awards I received: Best Video at Videoformes New Media & Video Art Festival (France), Best Experimental Documentary at Sopot Independent Film Festival (Polland), Best Experimental Video at Cineamazonia Festival (Brazil), Honorary Award at Alucine Toronto Latino Media Festival (Canada) and Honorary Award at International Experimental Film Festival Carbunari (Italy).

In 2005, my first documentary feature film, "Woman Cries Out!", received the Best Film Award at both the CineEsquemaNovo (Brazil) and Cineport (Portugal) festivals. It was also nominated for the UNESCO Breaking The Chains Award for Best Film on the Theme of Slavery and its Outcomes.

I have participated in about 30 solo and collective exhibitions in Brazil, Canada, USA, Spain, Poland, France, Portugal and Sweden with videos, installations, performances and photos.

I have been awarded the following grants: Support for Production in Visual Arts - São Paulo Arts Council; Support for Production - Recife Art Week; Exhibition Program - São Paulo Cultural Center; and Cultural Diffusion and Exchange Program - Brazilian Ministry of Culture. I have been nominated for the Sergio Motta Award of Art and Technology (2007) and the Nascente Art Award (2000).

About my artwork
I work primarily with video and photography.

I'm concerned with examining the connections between the camera, subject, author and viewer. I'm interested in issues such as the construction of identity, communication and voyeurism. I also investigate how the relationship between our body and the surrounding world (ie. nature or urban settings and culture) shapes our identity.

My greatest challenge is to find new forms of narrative by confronting established film language. I construct narratives, strategies and perceptions of reality, in search of fresh ways to connect with the viewer, defying his/her own perception of the world and proposing thought-provoking sensorial and emotional experiences.

This year I've been also busy with the Exquisite Corpse Video Project, a collaboration project with several international artists that met here in artreview. More info at www.artreview.com/profile/excorpse

Essay on Face to Face

by Carla Zaccagnini Contents of the love dimension, which punctuate the limits of the understandable and utterable, tend to put in check the validity of any artistic representation. I think, again, on Fernando Pessoa and his poem in which he feels tired of symbols and wants the concrete happiness of the seamstress who he sees standing on the corner, waiting for the unlikely return of the boyfriend who left her. There are no symbols that can compare to the joy which only she might feel in case,… Continue

Essay on WINDMAKER

The Ghosts of the Place, by Alessandra Ribeiro The blue light, from the alien night, the light that turns everything into blue melancholy, melancholic alien blue light on a dark and sad night, during which the dancing woman wanders, the ghost of the place. Each place where there was life stores its ghosts, life traces of that place that is gone, traces of who passed by it, traces of past stories. The places die like people, loose their life when people’s lives are gone and start to disin… Continue

Tropic Of Capricorn (2005) 30 minutes Written, Produced and Directed by Kika Nicolela Tropic of Capricorn is a short documentary by Kika Nicolela that tells the tales of Brazilian transsexuals. They lie upon the bed and tell their stories to the camera which is mounted on the ceiling, echoing the film’s title, “Tropic of Capricorn,” the southernmost point at which the sun can appea… Continue

.. NESTE MOMENTO , ela observa , e chega a conclusao , que perante a gloriosa natureza , ela NADA MAIS È , DO QUE UMA PEQUENISSIMA MUHLER !.. com suas largas ANCAS femininas ¨!!!... bela musica! ¨tecnicamente muito bem feito !!... gosto do preto e branco !... è condizente com o INTERNO misterioso do humano afeminado !
