About my artwork
Acts of faith.

To believe in painting. To believe that the sum of several pigments on a surface can successfully influence a person’s consciousness. This type of faith is, of course, no different from any other. It is this the faith that has guided any artist, that has made art and humanity possible: to believe, naively or rightfully that a group of sounds, words or gestures, a sum of brick and mortar, can not only communicate, but alter the consciousness and existence of the author, and the expectator, and the user… It is this faith that can come to alter the course of history, or that can become evidence of this change.

To believe in abstraction, in representation, in appropriation, in different strategies to present a piece… to believe that there can be a real reason do discuss all of these concepts… that it is worth doing so beyond speeches, events, fellowships, biennials, galleries and institutions… or at least, in spite of them, in spite of Art itself, just for the pleasure of doing so and the real, deep necessity of discussing them.

All this can be summarized in one word: sincerity.

It is this how I feel about Carolina Convers’ work: before being work, art, painting; before being categorized or classifiable in the story of form, style and trends, art may very well be necessity, nostalgia, yearning. Before the theatrical presumption that goes with assuming oneself as an artist, comes the certainty of making and acting...

Fortunately, sometimes there is more than simply material on a surface; and in this pure nakedness of being, pigment, plastic, and color achieve a presence that unchains dialogue between moments in Art with other images, surfaces and references. Because Carolina’s acetates before anything else, evoke other footprints, traces, steps, marks, clues and signals.

ART BY A NON-PAINTER KAMIKAZE WITH CONTAINED EXPLOSIVE MEMORIES What is interesting about Convers’ work is the synthesis that she accomplishes through mixing materials that are unconventional in the Art world and that reflect a process based on juxtaposing its elements. Her pieces… Continue
