STEVE HOUGH: Still, New Paintings

GREGORY JACOBSEN
Prostrate: New Paintings & Drawings

January 8 – February 20, 2010
Artist’s Reception: Friday, January 8th, 5:30-7:30pm

Preview Gregory Jacobsen’s work: www.zggallery.com/jacobsen.htm

Gregory Jacobsen’s fifth solo show “Prostrate: New Paintings & Drawings” at Zg Gallery features new works from his botanical heaps series - still life bouquets composed of such disparate elements as meat and muscle tissue, wigs, secreting organs, petits-fours, flora, fauna and various food stuffs, set in romantic landscapes, tenderly gathered into bundles and tied with flowing ribbons.

Jacobsen’s work continues to take root where schadenfreude meets Sigmund Freud. As he delights in the spectacle of failure and the triumph of the id, his work is inspired by what he views as the ridiculousness and uselessness of human vanity, frailty and sexuality. He wallows in the nightmare of aging, disease, deformities and perversions, as he lovingly delineates every wrinkle, mutation and hair-sprouting mole of the unique individuals that inhabit his work.

Gregory Jacobsen attended the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, and has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles & Berlin. He is a member of the locally acclaimed collective known as “Lovely Little Girls”. “Prostrate: New Paintings & Drawings” Opens, Friday, January 8th and will be on view through February 20th, 2010.

A hard-cover, 20 pages, color illustrated book, featuring paintings and drawings from Gregory Jacobsen’s 2009 solo exhibition “Prostrate” will accompany the exhibition. Contact Zg Gallery to pre-order a signed copy.
