If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Photography
About my artwork
I am interested in exploring the dual ontology of hybrid identities created by migrant experiences. The artworks consist of self portraits photographed in reconstructed spaces that form a new paradigm where cultural crossings, fusions occur in hyper-reality. It is a third space where the redefinition of identity occurs, without the dictation of modes of cultural stereotypes that occur in society.
Dichotomy, 2007
The series explores the theme of division and duality between a person's newly adopted culture and their attachment to their cultural heritage. Montage and layering processes represent the deconstruction and reconstruction of a previous identity as one journeys through the adaptive process of finding a sense of belonging.
Dis-oriental, 2008
Images from Dis-oriental are simulations involving identity constructs and spatial metaphors, which communicate the narrative of cultural displacement. A migrant’s disorientated world is described through Dis-oriental’s sequence that weaves in and out of daydream and reality. Surreal dreamscapes disrupts notions of familiar suburban reality, raising feelings of uncanny or unhomeliness. The dynamic tension of cultural influences from East and West within my identity is expressed through dual spaces above and below mirrored surfaces and compartmentalised rooms.

Thank you...that's exactly what I was trying to discover - the way in which you were using the term. I hope by asking I have not offended you. I agree any image is open to interpretation - or misinterpretation. Which is why I asked.

Yes...I understand that from the work which successfully investigates those uncertainties and ambiguities. My point is that the word "dis oriental" as a term of cultural analysis carries meanings not directly pertinent to the work, which may prove distracting and confusing. I was thinking especially of Edward Said's usage.

Excellent - I like your work very much and can see that it explores questions of personal ontology and cultural identity. But much of it, I wouldn't call it "dis-oriental" - which to my understanding is a misunderstanding of western culture by an oriental sensibility. But maybe this is just my occidental understanding of the term. I'd like to hear yours'? This is just a quibble about the overall title of the work - which itself is strong and thoughtful.

Congratulations on finishing your degree. I hope you get the grade you wanted and wish you well. Keep in touch.
