About my artwork
My paintings are a grouping of thoughts evaluated, examined, and checked off. The act of brushing, wiping, abstracting, and isolating parts of the space correspond to the ability to question identity. The application of layers, or veils, throughout the painting depicts a history that I tend to uncover or mark over. My interaction with each picture is a study of personal growth within a space, even scratching away the top layers at times just to see if I can clearly reveal the past.
I started painting from a figurative and landscape approach, but found that in order to understand my own language within the picture, I could use the mark as a way to interact with the presence of the canvas. In addition, I found that I could confront the questions that arose, with abstracted forms representing my dislodged thoughts. -
The importance of space as a whole made of separate and distinct marks signifies the presence of a singular moment symbiotically growing from the ground. The set of marks lodged in the surrounding ground, which I refer to as an episode, may stand alone in a vast open area of space, or may thrive off of other neighboring episodes. These marks are growing out of, driven away from, or covered up by layers of white or black. The layers are veils used to isolate relationships, to clarify questions. By interacting with space to form a language or map with distance, and exchanging the set of opposing - and sometimes violating – marks, the paintings may resemble topographical maps, moss diagrams, or sky charts. The movement of the singular mark inside the picture plane space engages the whole as a collision point between the expansive and the definite; and the white or black space of the picture is equally important to the episode, because it stands as the given point of beginning.
The work also may suggest a type of biological study, chaotic climate changes, and the realization of our present-day fear toward catastrophe.
