I am...
an an artist in San Antonio, Texas, USA. I recently was on a Fulbright grant in Finland and traveled extensively in Europe, including England. I exhibit nationally and internationally. I also am an instructor of art at Our Lady of the Lake University and Palo Alto College.
About my artwork
Natural forms and processes have always been a principal source of inspiration for my work. My way of mark making is precise even obsessive. I balance tight lines with gestural marks that are unexpected, more subconscious in nature. Forms are magnified and cropped until they become otherwordly. In Finland, I have been studying the rich heritage of design. This research has led me to further simplify forms and edit compositions to only the essentials. Building many transcluscent layers is also a part of my aesthetic as demonstrated by the mushroom or sieni mixed media pieces, which use bees wax to add aromas and tactility to the work. These pieces were on display at the Fulbright Center in Helsinki.
As well as these smaller more intimate works, I have most recently created very large prints and drawings used for an installation project at the Nelimarkka Museo in Alajärvi, Finland. I have an interest in myths and fantastic tales that also influence my ideas. These works are based on stories of the vironsusi, Finnish werewolf, and my own experiences of the Finnish woods. In the 3 meter (approximately 9 feet) long woodcut, Black Winter, I abstract the woods into a graphic tableau that encompasses even oppresses the viewer, much as the endless nights do this far north.
The wall installation, Mariposa Machismo, currently on display at the university of Texas San Antonio Art Gallery utilizes natural forms as more of a social commentary piece. The butterflies were digitally cut out of MDF board, coated with copper powder then silkscreened with text relative to an abnormal phenomena of exploding butterfly populations in central Texas. The piece is visually powerful while also addressing social, gender, and environmental issues relative to the region.
Artists I like
Lee Bontecou, Ruth Asawa, Ernesto Neto, Amy Cutler, Kiki Smith, Thomas Schütte, Alvar Aalto, William Kentridge, Nicola Lopez, Julie Mehretu, Brothers Quay, Murakami, Art Spigelman, Darren Waterston, Sigmar Polke, Paul Klee, Hiroshige, Goya, Durer

Gender Studies, Nature vs. Nurture Discourse, Environmental Issues

How are you. It's me Nick in case you did not quite recognize my gorgeous selfportrait. Anyways, I just wanted to tell you congratulations on your inclusion in the Art Nuevo. I meant to tell you several months ago but I didn't see you until a few weeks ago and then I just got so excited to see you that I forgot to tell you. So congratulations on Art Nuevo and I hope that next time I see you it is sooner rather than later.

At last! A layman's guide to the Government's healthcare reforms, explaining them in terms so simple they might have been written by a complete idiot, and charting the development of health care from the good old days to the present and beyond - with hilarious results! In fabulous stickman-o-vision, with bits of colour.…See More
